I was sent a .rmi file. It's some kind of MIDI file specific to Windows. Quicktime won't read it. Is there someway to read these files on a Mac, or is there some kind of conversion utility for turning it into a proper .mid file?
Thanks

It's the Windows Media strategy at work.sholland wrote:I was sent a .rmi file. It's some kind of MIDI file specific to Windows.
That file type is supposed to contain both SMF and DLS data. You need a converter utility (Google it, you should be able to find a download). Or look for something that will read a "RIFF" file and extract a MIDI type 0 or type 1 file.
Alternatively, have your source see if they can send you a standard MIDI file format.

Thanks for the advice. I've just spent a couple of hours googling around for a utility that will do the conversion, but to no avail. Of course, I asked the guy who sent me the .rmi file to send me a proper MIDI file, but I thought that on the off chance that I got another of these .rmi things I'd be able to just convert it instead of waiting for my collaborator to respond.

That figures. Take an open standard, put a wrapper on it to make it proprietary, then provide no method to extract the standard file format. It's the Microsoft way.sholland wrote:Thanks for the advice. I've just spent a couple of hours googling around for a utility that will do the conversion, but to no avail. Someone mentioned a utility called midigrab that might do what you want. My guess is that it's Windows only. Anyway, best of luck on it.
