All I wanted was an iPod…
...and now I am upgrading everything.
Although things have been click-tracking along fine, since I am in between projects, no time better than now to make the leap on my 1 GHz Powerbook G4 from DP 4.12/OSX 10.2.8 to DP 5/OSX 10.4.7.
Ram upgrade to 1 GB? Check.
Drivers for 828 mkII••™s, MOTU Universal Audio and MIDI Express XT? Check.
Tiger? Check
DP 5? Check
Back up everything to DVD first.
Upgrade the ram second.
Install Tiger third.
Install DP 5 fourth.
Load up new drivers fifth.
Cross my fingers sixth?
Advice? Hints? Prayers? What else should I expect making the leap?
And while I am at it, any known problems with Reason 3.0 and Tiger?

my g4 800 ran so much better on tiger than jaguar, it was amazing.
i would install drivers after tiger and before dp5.
if you have an ipod w/ a decent size hard drive, you can enable disk use and back up to that instead of wasting time w/ dvds.
[kinda off topic]
also, if you format your ipod for windows, you can take it back and forth between platforms, not so if you format it for mac. i can't count how many times this has come in handy for me.
[/kinda off topic]
the only problems i've had with reason is that it was wasting space on my hard drive. i reformatted the other day tho, and that cleared everything up

From what I am reading so far (I dug a lil deper in the history) I should be okay moving to DP5/Tiger with my setup. I figure I can make the jump this week, debug for the next two weeks and hit the new projects when I get back from vacation in August. I just don't want any surprises. I guess it is safe to trash DP3/OS 9 now, huh?

as much as i would like not to have to mess w/ OS9 ever again, i still have multiple projects on it that i need to bring into dp5 (from cubase vst). even tho i would like to dedicate my whole internal drive to OSX, i really don't see it happening.
a couple of friends and i have made the switch to tiger/dp5 with no unsolvable glitches. i make use of almost every new feature (from 4.61), and haven't had any system instability issues.
In my experience using a windows formatted drive to transfer mac files creates problems with the resource fork. This means that information on which program to open it with is lost for dp project files and others that aren't smart. Sometimes the resource fork is transfered as a hidden file which can be reattached using the right software (I think there is a command-line tool that does it), but I haven't ever been able to get this to work. My advice would be to use a mac-formated drive to back up critical stuff.
you're right, i probably shouldn't have tossed that tidbit in, given his situation. i mentioned i reformatted the other day, but before i did that, i reformatted my ipod back to mac so i could store my important mac files on it.
however, for most day to day operations, a windows format gives me a lot of flexibility. sorry to steer anyone in the wrong direction.
