Hi Post people-
I'm mixing a feature length doc for which I did the score. It's a small operation and the director's fairly technophobic. I had him make me an OMF and an AAF as well as a reference AIFF.
I could open the OMF, made by Final Cut Pro, and that got me all the audio on tracks but no mix information.
I had the director make me an AAF in a program called http://www.automaticduck.com/, which is supposed to smooth file transfers between Final Cut, Protools, Avid and DP.
The AAF file remained greyed out and unavailable in the "open" and "load" dialogues. If I double clicked it, it launched ProTools, and of course I don't have digitranslator, so it was useless.
I tried as a test creating an AAF file in DP and it opened in DP 4.6 but crashed in 5.01.
So... I guess I'm asking if anyone here has successfully used AAFs from Final Cut Pro or Automatic Duck, and also if anyone knows whether FCP could make OMFs that retain volume and pan information.
Sorry for the rambling... I realize there are a smattering of AAF related posts that can be found by searching but none answer my question.
Thanks!
ps. also, anyone have any problems with OMFs decreasing clip lengths?
AAF Files from FCP. Anyone? OMFs? OMG.

I feel your pain...
Automatic Duck does make a plugin for FCP which allows it to export proper OMF files. I'm using one right now. It works great: pan and level info intact. Though, of course, I'm redoing most of that anyway.
That's the only way to get stuff from FCP that I know of... I didn't know that Automatic Duck had an FCP option for AAF. AAFs seem to be more finicky in general with DP.
Good luck!
