Skeeter - "Possibly The Only..."

Post by jpetrisko »

I put out this record a little while back, a year and a half ago, on UK label Boss Tuneage. Tracked mostly on my Metric Halo 2882, mixed and mastered by me completely "in the box" in DP3 and 4. Pretty good learning experience for me. Enjoy... and let me know what I could be doing better, besides isolating that hihat a bit more.

Checked out the my space place...

No real suggestions as I think you guys managed to get it right the first time.

So was this DP 4 or earlier?

Hmmm... you know I really had to stop and think about it for a minute. Actually, none of it was done in DP4... all DP3.

I'm doing the lead vox and guitars, and depending on the tune (and part) some bass, too.

Pro sound. Good example of an ITB process.

How did you record the drums? Did you record all the parts at once on your Metric Halo?
recording: Mac Mini 2018 - 32GB RAM - 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 - two Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 - OS 14.7.2 - DP 11.34
mixing: Mac Mini M4 Pro - 64 GB RAM - Focusrite Scarlett Solo - OS 15.3.2 - DP 11.34
VIs and Plug-ins: hundreds (amassed since 1990)

Drums were not easy, as he is an extremely hard hitter. Lots of hat bleed. Here's the lowdown:

RE20 Kick
SM57 Snare, Floor, Rack
KM184 Stereo/mono Overs

Direct Bass (old transformer direct box) EMGs
57 guitar

Room Mic instead of stereo over on "Crash it good"

Hence, all 8 channels at once.

Room mic was pretty much never used, since it was a terrible sounding room. Most of the guitars on the record were overdubbed from my Pod 2. Vox are either CAD E100 "Crash It Good," KM184 "King," or RE20 on most BU's.

Mixing for the most part is waves ren comp and eqs, on all except for the drums, where the PSP plugs absolutely rule.

Mix bus is slammed into Vintage Warmer.

Lessons learned:

Ditch the room mic and use bottom snare mic instead. By the time I got enough high end on the snare, the hat bleed was ridiculous. Maybe another mic further out from the kick to get a more organic kick sound.

EMGs suck for recording, at least through that DI. Way too much boom. I always had better tone plugging directly into the MIO with my passive fender basses.

Overall, great learning experience. No one suspected it was a basement tape. Even got played on New York's biggest rock station. The next one promises to be even better. Unfortunately the label folded, so I'll have to find someone else to put it out.
