Jim's Music Samples

Post by Jim »

All the free music on my site was produced entirely in DP, from DP version 1 on Mac OS7 with an Audiomedia3 card (4 RCA inputs) to my current rig running DP5 on OS10.3 with a MOTU 2408, Presonus DigiMax LT and a Yamaha 01v, along with a few other items. The only 3rd party plugs I use are PSP MixPack and PSP Vintage Warmer. All recorded in a "home studio" (a room in my house). Most of the guitars were recorded direct. About 2% of the time, I mic-ed the guitar cabinet. You tell me which was which.

Warning: These are all full length mixes, and unless noted otherwise, are jams made up on the spot. So, if you're averse to the latter-era Miles Davis method of "composition," you can skip them all. These are all instrumentals. There's a fair amount of experimentation in odd time signatures.

Speaking of Miles, he's one influence that I believe all the players on my site share. Most of us also love the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Some of the other influences aren't so obvious.

This guitarist plays a Warr guitar, and triggers off a Boomerang and Echoplex in real time:

Same guitarist with a keyboard player:

The guitarist here is a Jeff Beck clone, and the bassist's favorite bassist is Gary Willis. Some funk and blues are in evidence on some of the selections:

The guitarist on these is a heavy metal-demi-god in his own right. The bassist is one of the most powerful and accurate I've had the pleasure to play with. Don't get the impression this is metal, though... although there is a bit of shred here and there:

(Note: Michael had just received this $300 guitar from ebay and his Yamaha effects box the day prior... that's why he's flipping through the presets a lot.)

Another permutation of some of the preceding players:

These players are more into rock than jazz or prog:

More with Cerrutti. Fifteen Seven(which alternates between 15/4 and 7/4 time) was discussed, rehearsed once, then played. Then Cerrutti did some gtr overdubs:

Two more excellent players with deep Prog roots. You'll probably hear the Allan Holdsworth influence in the guitar work, and the bassist's work recalls Chris Squire to my ear:

A prog/metal confab. Michael is playing a MIDI guitar on this set, and that's how the samples were triggered.

I played drums and recorded, edited and mixed all the selections. I did some overdubbing on several tunes with my MIDI rig and either a keyboard or MIDIKat.

All of your comments about the music or recording techniques are welcome, pro or con.

James, I clicked on a bunch of those, and couldn't get anything to open. Is your site running ok?

Great mix, the ebb and flow (lack of a better description) of the music was fantastic.
