install problems dp5

Post by lestermagneto »

wondering if anyone else is having problems getting dp5 to run on an imac g5, running latest tiger 10.4.6, i got it running fine on my powerbook with the same system, but everytime i try and boot it on my imac, i go to create a file or open an old one and it just gives me a message saying that it was created with a later version and then crashes. what gives? it's a legal copy!

thanks for any advice in advance

Lester:

It doesn't sound like an install problem, per se. Some people have had trouble actually getting DP to install at all.

However, others have had various problems with opening older files, and some solutions have been found. It's difficult to narrow this down because there could be many extenuating circumstances depending upon you setup, what was involved with the older projects, what the new default settings of DP might be vs. your older projects...

My first thoughts would be to Trash Preferences and AU Cache, then reboot the computer.

Any more info regarding your computer? Audio interface, RAM, audio and studio configuration settings, sample rates...?

thanks frodo for trying to help me, i tried what you suggested, trashing the prefs au cache etc, to no avail. i cannot even get the program to boot. after installation, i open it, it asks to choose a file or create new one, and either option just brings up a dialog saying how it was created with an older version (which is odd, considering a new file was just created!). not quite sure what to do.
4.6.1 works fine, i just dont really get it.....

any other ideas?

thanks again...

aha, found out what it is! i have a habit of logging my sn# and reg codes for reason etc, into a database in case i lose the cards or dont have the manuals on me etc, it seems DP5 likes you to enter the reg code by hand as opposed to copy and pasting it, that is what cause the problem, so by removing my auth using terminal, and reinstalling, voila, problem solved.

thanks for your help though,

Great, Lester.

I would have never thought of the Terminal authorization method. Glad you got it sorted.

Say hi to Chicago for me-- (my birthplace)!

The more I think about it, the more ingeniuous linking Terminal with authorizations makes sense. I'm having tons of trouble with Sycrosoft right now. Wish there a way Terminal could solve that issue.

(man-- just thinking of Chicago gives me cravings for a genuine deep dish pizza from Gino's East. Didn't mean to go OT, but is Gino's East still there? Or Giordano's? The original Uno's?)

Fancy Colors!

(and the Approaching Storm, and Beginnings and Color my World, and... you know, those were really great days for cover bands. I arranged all that stuff, and have arranged Chicago hits for big shows even recently)

I've only been to Uno's a couple of times, but at the time I went, those were the best pizzas I'd ever had. Now I can get pretty good pizza in Dallas, but it's still not the same. Of course, on the other hand, you can't get Tex-Mex in Chicago anything like you can in Dallas. There's always a trade-off.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled DP-oriented threading. (I'm planning to take DP on my Powerbook into Uno's next time I go. How's THAT for getting back on topic? ;))

lester,
i am having the same problem but reinstalling and entering the key# by hand seams not to work in my case.

two days ago, i repartitioned my hard drive and reinstalled the system and DP5.
when i try to open or save a file in DP5 it gives me exactly the message you received,
that it can not write the file to the disk ot it can not open the file, because it was created with a newer version.
this seams very strange to me.

i repaired permissions,
changed the language to us-english,
deinstalled and installed again,
but still the same crash after trying to open or saving a file.

did you do anything else besides entering the code by hand?

hey, there was a thread on the motu tech notes that helps with this, you have to remove the invisible authorization dp puts on your drive...

here is the link, let me know if it helps you out!

And where would that be? There used to be a couple of Uno's in Dallas but even they weren't that great and I've found very little that even comes close to "pretty good pizza".
