sequence hiccup

Post by peter mumme »

Hullo

Am using DP4.12 and OSX10.2.8 and have recorded, edited and backed-up hundreds of sequences over the past few years.

All with no insurmountable problems - until now, with this one sequence that I cannot open.
3/4 MIDI tracks plus a couple of audio dumps, won't load, freezes ..

And the back-up copy is also unopenable, unfortunately

I'm wondering if anyone might have experienced an odd one like this and worked out a solution - like 'grabbing' tracks from the (unopened) sequence somehow and pasteing into a new one ..

Any clues??

thanks

Have you trashed your Preferences? if not, give that a try before you boot DP. Then try to open your project again to see if it works.

If not...

Make sure your Settings match the old project, ie: that you have enough of the right kinds of audio tracks available and active.

If that has nothing to do with anything... Quit DP and:

Try removing the Audio folder from the project folder-- put it on another drive if available or your desktop, and then see if the file will open. You will get some warning that the audio can't be found. Don't worry about it. We'll ignore the Audio folder for now.

If the project will open, save it as an SMF and skip to step 3.

2. If the project won't open, just open the SMF without the audio and save it. (Very important step.)

3. Quit DP and swap your empty Audio folder in the new project you just saved. Start DP and open your SMF and save it as a new DP session. Drag your audio files into the tracks window (or into the Sequence Editor Window). Hopefully, your audio files are time stamped. That would make putting them in the right places much easier. If not, you'll have to move them manually.

4. Save project.

thanks Frodo

yep, tried preferences, permissions, dumping audio files .. freeze!

it's just this one seq, literally out of hundreds; obviously saved it with some sort of corruption I didn't know about

I don't know how to open it as an SMF if I can't open it as a DP project anyway ??

My original thought was to sneak up on it - as in older 'grab' (other) seq tracks days - and re-lay in a new seq; but I can't see this either

hmmm

Hi Peter. Try loading the file in "MIDI Only" Hold down the shift key while loading DP, (it will temporarily disable the audio system and drivers) Try opening the file. If the song loads up (MIDI only) then go to Setup/Audio System and select either DAE or Motu Audio system (depending on your interfaces) DP will then load all drivers and plugins. If it freezes then you may have a plugin that doesn't agree with that particular file. If it all seems to be fine, use your save a copy, include all your audio, rename the file and save to a different drive.
Hope this helps.

Thanks John

Didn't know about this trick; didn't work though, unfortunately

I recall noticing that a plug-in (MS decoder) has been acting oddly about the last time I opened this seq; is it possible to open DP minus audio and minus plugs ?

cheers

Hi Peter. If you suspect MS Decorder is the problem, drag the plug bundle out of the folder. HD/library/Plug-ins/MAS/MS Decoder.bundle to the desktop, and then fire up DP.

You can make a New File and then under the File menu choose load and load in the data from the problematic file, or at least try to.

Thanks John and Dave

Have tried just about every combinatin of opening DP with/without audio/plugs; using older DP versions - nothing; freeze

I'm wondering if a newer DP version (I'm on 4.12) might succeed in opening this seq.?
And/or a much faster newer mac (this is an aging G4) ??

Would any of you have the time and inclination to have a go?

It'd be much appreciated; I can email a copy of the offended DP seq file ..

thanks for the assistance
