2408 mkII digital noise

Post by Eyalc »

Hey all,

I'm finishing some studio upgrades, and I'm having some issues with digital noise and clicks in my audio chain.

First, the hardware: MOTU 2408 mkII, PCI-424 card, Mac G5, Logic Pro 7.

The history, I used to run an optical out of the 2408 into a yamaha 02R. This worked great. No noise, no problems - clear sound. I was using the analog outs of the 02R to my monitors, headphones, etc.

I recently sold the 02R. Now I don't have any digital devices (in or out) connected to the 2408. I'm using the analog ins for my synths.

I'm sending an analog out signal (channels 1 & 2) to my monitors, headphones, etc. I'm hearing digital noise and clicks when I turn the volume up about halfway. I configured the PCI-424 to be the word clock master (setting is "internal"), but I still get the noise and clicks. I was thinking that was the right way to set it up.

Anyway, I get this noise whether I've launched Logic or not. I just can't figure out why I'm getting the noise and clicks.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm fresh of out ideas how to clean up my signal.

Thanks!

Clicks with a 24 I/O

Post by snipedog »

Hello all,
I am having a similar problem with a MOTU 24 I/0.
It produces clicks which are prominent enough to show up on the meters every tenseconds or so.
I am running a Mac G5, OS 10.4 and the clicks happen with Cubase SX3, Peak and iTunes with similar frequency.
I have tried changing the slot, re-installing removing all other cards.
I have finally gone back to my M Audio Delta which runs smoothly with no clicks at all.
Any suggestions would be welcome. I had assumed MOTU gear was rather better developed than this!
Best Wishes
Steve

not just clicks

Hi guys. I just installed a 2408 mk II and a PCI-324 on my PowerMac G4, a dual 1.2ghz / 1.5gb ram running OSX 10.45. Loaded the latest drivers I could find on the MOTU site -- 1.08 -- and when switching my systems audio to run through the 2408, there's lots of white noise through the headphone output and through the main outs (which feed my Mackie 1604VLZ channels 15 & 16) -- it sounds like a scratchy record or an egg frying but with lots of high pitched sound. No audio from the computer seems to come out though.

I'm in the process of rewiring my whole studio so there's not a huge rush on this but I was wondering what I can do to make things better. I've got a behringer ada-8000 plugged into the adat B port but unplugged it and turned it off and that made no difference.

I also have a 1224 that I bought on ebay, and that interface does not seem to suffer from the same issues as the 2408. Did I buy a bum unit? the original owner says that he had the same problem with OSX 10.4x, but that it works fine with OSX 10.28. Sadly, I prefer Logic Pro and GarageBand, and have no desire to retrograde my OS which would make these programs not work.

I wonder if the cats at MOTU know about this problem? The 10.4 drivers are about a year old.

These sound like clock issues to me.

I get a constant "white noise" in each track when I transfer from ADAT to the computer through the 2408 and don't have the clock set correctly.

At other times I get the clicks every few seconds. Always means I have a clocking problem. I normally get it fixed within a few minutes by making sure the resolution is set correctly and the clocking is set correctly.

I have the same problem after moving up to a new G5 dual 2.7, using Logic 7.1. Everything worked great in my old G4 933. But now, with a new pci 424 card on the G5,I get the same popping noises you're talking about. Any help will be appreciated.

MOTU 24i

I've also discovered (unfortunately!) a problem with the 24i...

I don't know for sure yet, but it seems that if I load a session done at 48 the 24i seems to remember the 48, even when I load a 44.1 session.

The result is the light on the front panel still shows 48 instead of 44.1...in addition (and here's the problem) it generates a low level rapid "digital clicking" sound (not your typical incorrect clock kinda sound).

I disconnected the output from the mic-pre feeding the 24i, to isolate the problem...it's not in the mic pre.

I noticed it just the other day recording a "spoken word" production after the talent left and with no music to hide the bg noise. Fortunately it's low level enough in comparison to the read to probably not be a big problem, but it's still there, none the less...

(I may post a link later to an audio file with this anomaly...with the nosie floor boosted to hear this digital bg)

so... a right pain in the but!!

i have these 2 drivers somewhere give me a shout if you havent solved your problem!

these drivers are from well over a year ago! maybe 2 years ago? for a mk2 2408

My problem turned out to be a bad PCI card. Just got a replacement card from MOTU and everything seems OK.
