DP5 on Intel Mac using Boot Camp?

Post by Jazzooo »

I've been trying to decide between DP and Logic in a hurry--I'm leaving the country for three months in a little over a week with my new MacBook Pro. So far, it seems like Logic is my only option even though I think I'd prefer to start with DP.

Why hasn't anyone suggested using Boot Camp Beta to run a Windows program like DP5, and then simply upgrading to the Universal Binary version when it comes out? What am I missing?

I know very little about computers, and less about Macs, so if this is a dunce question, my apologies.

Wow--that's cool. Have you noticed anything strange about it, or is all well?

I already ordered Logic, which will be here tomorrow. I'll use it for the summer and then reevaluate.

Giles... are you a magician? How did you do that?

Jazz... Logic is very different from DP. To me, Logic is less logical than DP. I think switching to DP from Logic would be easier than the reverse, but once you "get" logic and get used to all the free toys they throw at you... you probably won't have a reason to go to DP.

No Magician. I picked this thing up yesterday at 3pm, came home installed my normal junk, then installed dp5 off the install disc. dbl clicked it, it booted. I set up the hardware connections and viola she worked. Note I said macbook, not macbook pro.

All I can do is relate my experiences.

Note. After living on a G5, this rosetta translated version is SLOW, though screen updates are quite nimble. LOL.

As I typed this figured I'd screen shot a session. Note the sidebar for all the tracks playing back.

BTW I have logic and DP and I will never get rid of DP. Logic sucks for REAL mixing IMHO.

Of Course it runs slow (Rosetta Conversion). But it runs. So a UB will be a breath of fresh air. BTW the tracks are playing of a USB 2.0 Drive. One of those 250GB IDE deals I cased in a USB 2.0 Case. for 29 Bucks

BTW, those reading my sig, note it says 2GB for mem on the macbook. I ordered the mem last night, so it wont show in screenshot till it arrives and I install it. SO no haters. LOL. when I get it installed I'll screenshot again. I expect DP to run much better after I do the Ram Upgrade.

I am very sorry but I think that I need to help you out .....
Nobody seems to care about explaining to you the difference between being on MACOSX and Window ......thru boot camp .....
DP5 is strickly a MACOSX piece of software ......and do not run in Window .....So you cannot use boot camp to boot window and hope to run DP5 ....

Thanks, Aramis--but Swiftness did point it out to me in the second post of this thread!

Well, I'm sitting here with my new MacBookPro, my new Ultralite and my new version of Logic.

Now what? ;)

I tried to run DP 4.5 on my 17" MacbookPro (which is awesome by the way, no whine, tolerable heat, etc) and it would give me the color wheel of death after it loaded the plugins. I ended up having to restart my computer the few times i tried it. The Logic Express trial off of apple's site wouldnt work either in the sense that it wouldnt let me load my garage band projects, and would ever let me arm tracks or record.

I think I'll be purchasing Logic Pro today. Ive never used Digital Performer but Im coming from sonar so do you think this would be the right move? Any opinions or input would be great. Thanks

Won't Sonar run in BootCamp/Windows on the MacBook Pro?

DP4.61 on a macbook pro 2.16 certainly works better through rosetta than it did through my old, strained G4 powerbook. However, it still crashes due to plug-ins and processor strain I think. Everything that runs in conjunction (rewire, plug-ins and the like) must also be running through rosetta and be PPC or Universal. Only use if you must and you can afford crashes and restarts.

I will upgrade to DP5 as soon as it goes Universal but for now I have to use Logic or Live with the Intel.

my two cents...
