Thinking of purchasing iPartition for iBook, any comments?
I purchased iDefrag from coriolis earlier this year and have been using it succesfully of my iBook since then, however it doesn't work at all for my external usb 2.0 drives. I have two and it hangs up on both of them. Regardless of this problem with iDefrag I am considering purchasing iPartition because I would like to partition my internal drive without having to wipe it first. Have any of you had any successes or failures using this product? Are there other products on the market that perform the same task? Thanks for any insight.
Unless you're going to be repartitioning frequently I would suggest a full clone using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external HD (check that this has worked perfectly before continuing by booting it up - won't work if usb unfortunately) then just format and repartition your drive. I have partitioned for years and am now getting most of my macs back to non-partitioned drives as OSX and most apps assume more and more that everything is on one partition. If you have a load of free space on your main HD then this just makes it easier for OSX to defrag stuff in the background (rendering iDefrag redundant as well). As far as your externals go then I would recommend wiping and reformatting every now and then if they are slowing down.
p.s. I have been using macs forever - OS9 and before needed defragging regularly - OSX doesn't
