i use OSX 10.3.9 | DP 4.6 | Dual 1.8GB 4GB RAM PCI (not PCI-X)
it has been very stable for me. i have only managed to crash he system twice in a year and half. i have crashed DP less then 20 times, which has been do to 3rd party plug-ins usually. DP boots up pretty quick, so the crash isnt so bothersome especially since i save every 15 minues or so...
i have also heard this combination to be quite a reliable system...
although there are sooo many new combos out with the quad, or the pci-x or 10.4 or dp 5- im still tail between my legs watching the dust settle from what has looked like a few months of amazing improvements with more bugs to sort out, but this should be some great technology to use shortly... if yuu're not in a rush - i may suggest waiting around a few more months till everyone gets everything worked out

i will warn you because you stated you might get one... i own a mackie control, mackie control ext, and a mackie control c4.. as a control surface the mcu is great but it seems that in the transission to OS X from OS 9 the editing of plugins (Motu or Non-Motu) from the mackie control has been broken, switches that should require a numeric value are getting sent on/off values, really wierd.. not to mention the C4 doesnt even work in DP (Thats crazy).. •••• im tryng to write my own MIDDEV file cause im tired of waiting.. as far as os and machine type.. i run a dual 1.8 ghz g5 with 5.5 gb ram and a 1.2 terabyte raid.. i have no major machine/DP issues i am able to work despite the problem i mentioned above. be careful what you buy these days.. remember the intel powermacs (If we can call them that) are coming real soon so your kind of standng on moving ground.

By Mackie Tech Support the most stable system with DXB & DP has been OS 10.3.x & DP4.5 / 4.61 but then You don‘t have Aggregate Devices which are working great here. Also I understood that DP5 is not the best way with DXB.
G5 2x2.75GHz, 4G RAM, OSX 10.4.5, DP4.61, Mach5, 2408mkIII, 1296, ExpressXT, AutoTune3, Waves Renaissance, PowerCore mkII, UAD-1, 2-1176, Distressor, LA2A, TLAudio VTC, Mackie DXB200 w/3xUAD-1..

IO,
I had heard that the C4 didn't work at all w/ DP. I suppose the push to get the C4 to market had something to do with that. Hasn't it been out for a while now? Seems like Mackie would have written code for it by now. Hats off to you for trying to write your own.
Astia,
What kind of problems have you heard about w/DP5 & DXB? Does it look like they're working to resolve it?
Thanks all for your insight. I've got much more research to do before taking the plunge. Your responses have been most helpful.
