Cannot sync 2x 828 mkiis
Both both used, but was able to register them. Have emailed tech support (like, thursday or friday) and have yet to hear back.
one has firmware 1.0, the other 1.01. (don't see a way to upgrade firmware anywhere on MOTU site)
Have tried every set of drivers I can download. Have switched out firewire cables, have used short cable to bridge them, have tried multiple firewire ports on two computers.
As of now I have nothing that can generate clock at double speed other than the 828mkii's so I can't use WC (unless I'm missing something) to sync them. I don't even have WC cable.
Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated. I've got a live recording Friday that I can do at 24/48 but I have a studio session Sat I'd really like to do at 24/88.2 or 24/96.

this may be a stupid suggestion but make sure that one interface is master and one is slave, right? i hav not sync'd them myself so i dont know but i know you have to have one acting as a master and 828 mkii should generate. sorry if this is a goofy suggestion, sometimes i look for complicated solutions to simple problems.

I do this all the time. Two ways to set it up depending on your input sources. For analogue, you can use either, for ADAT input, use the first
828 --> firewire --> 828 --> Computer
If you are using DP, you go into your hardware set up and select both interfaces to load drivers for both. For the hookup below you only have to select the 828 attached to the computer, but use CueMix to route the second one from analogue ins to ADAT outs.
or
828 -->optical cable -->828 --> firewire --> Computer

I use two mkII's with my Dell laptop for live gigs.
Use the Audio panel to set the master's clock to internal. The other unit will slave automatically. In fact, that is what I dislike about these units.
I bought a master word clock but was unable to use it on both units because MOTU does not allow you to clock the slave directly.

Re: Cannot sync 2x 828 mkiis
I LOOKED IN THE 828 MANUAL AND THE SETUP IS DESCRIBED FOR MAC OS(YOU DID NOT SAY WHAT YOU USE), IT IS ON PAGE 32. DAISY CHAIN FIREWIRE AND WORD CLOCK, SET ONE TO MASTER AND THE OTHER TO SLAVE. THE MOTO FIREWIRE AUDIO SHOULD DISPLAY BOTH INTERFACES, SET THEM UP ONE AT A TIME MAKE SURE SAMPLE RATES ARE SAME. IF YOUR USING MORE THAN 2 INTERFACES THEY RECOMMEND A SEP SYNC.AgincourtDB wrote:Both both used, but was able to register them. SLAVING CAN BE DONE AT 1/2 THE SAME OR 2X CLOCK SPEED.
THIS IS JUST FROM THE MANUAL. YOU PROBABLY ALEADY KNEW THIS.

I have then connected (daisy-chained) via 3' firewire cable (this is supposed to work in and of itself according to the manual, and they would automatically sync. No joy. Tried #2 first in the chain, no joy. Added word clock cable (out on #1 to in on #2), no joy.
I see no way to set one to master and one to slave, other than selecting the clock source in the driver. Is there a switch somewhere?
signal routing below. the Firestation and the ADA8000 are connected with optical i/o. Firewire to the computer and between 828mkiis

YOU GOT ME THERE MAN. I THINK THAT PROBABLY SELECTING CLOCK SOURCE IN THE DRIVER IS THE ONLY WAY BUT I HAVE NOT CHECKED INTO WHAT CORE AUDIO'S MULTIPLE INTERFACE SUPPORT DOES WITH ALL THAT MYSELF.AgincourtDB wrote:I have then connected (daisy-chained) via 3' firewire cable (this is supposed to work in and of itself according to the manual, and they would automatically sync. I THINK ITS THAT YOU HAVE MORE THAN 2 THINGS TO SYNC. YOU ARE GONNA NEED A MULTIPLE WORD CLOCK OUT, OR SO SAYS THE MANUAL, THEY RECOMMEND ARDVARK AARD SYNC.
SORRY I COULDNT BE MORE HELP. I THINK YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT IT THAN I DO. MAYBE SOMEONE OUT THERE IS A POWER INTERFACE CHAINER.
MOTU SUPPORT SHOULD BE HELPING WITH SUCH ISSUES,
ME THINKS I NOT SO SMART.

Thanks for trying lane
It theoretically should work without any outside WC source or any WC/BNC cable.... the driver (Windows, btw, not that it matters I think) lets you set the clock source to internal for either MOTU unit, and the clock is carried to the other 828mkii via firewire and the A/D converters via the ADAT optical cable. It should work. Can't figure out why it doesn't. I'm calling MOTU in a minute here.

that is one reason that i usually by stuff like this from sweetwater. i can talk to the guy that sold it to me that day usually, they call me back and are reasonably proficient at address my needs.AgincourtDB wrote:I'll definitely post results. Motu's tech support line was BUSY, do you believe that?

Sure, but I wouldn't have been able to afford them new ($1500 instead of $1100) in the first place so I still would be out of luck.lane_hagood wrote:that is one reason that i usually by stuff like this from sweetwater. i can talk to the guy that sold it to me that day usually, they call me back and are reasonably proficient at address my needs.AgincourtDB wrote:I'll definitely post results. I just think they should answer their emails in, you know, less than a week. And I can't remember the last time I called any business and got a busy signal.

Are you on the PC? If so, this is currently an issue with Service Pack 2. The OS technically does not allow for multiple hardware devices to be daisy-chained together via firewire. However, there are a few workarounds:
1. Uninstall Service Pack 2, or go back to Service Pack 1.
2. Use the optical ports (if available) to send ADAT out of one interface into another. This will allow for a full track count while only having 1 unit in the Firewire bus.
3. Check with the manufacturer. Some units have specially written drivers to handle this type of setup although I don't believe the 828's do.
NOTE: This technicality does not apply to chaining separate devices together, such as a hard drive to an interface. It only applies to multiple interfaces on the same Firewire line.

I have a hard time with that for two reasons: 1) on the desktop I'm running Winpro x64 which is only at SP1 2) I have no way to uninstall SP2 on the laptop as it came with an integrated XP install and there is no uninstall folder hidden or otherwise.
If I use the ADAT ports I lose channels and/or can't run double speed (correct me if I'm wrong)
So am I out of luck? Heeeelp.... I've got $1100 invested in this pair of interfaces that are supposed to (and which are advertised to) work together.....
...and OF COURSE, Motu's tech support line is still a busy signal
