I'm looking into getting either the 896 or the 828, wondering who's used either one or both, pros and cons, etc.

The difference to 828mk2: I have 8 mic preamp intead of 2, but it‘s more expensive.
Yeah, but my 828mkII can do 10 analog tracks! Buy an 8 channel mic pre and you're ready to go!
