PCI 424 died?

Post by Kaatza Music »

I have a PCI 424 card which came with my 2408mk3. It has worked flawlessly for the past year and a half. Yesterday when I turned on my computer it no longer recognized the PCI 424 card. I tried downloading the latest drivers and re-installing the drivers. I re-booted the sytem several times. Nothing seems to have helped.

The only changes I have made to my computer recently were to install the Native Instruments Kontakt 2.1 upgrade and also the latest Security and iTunes upgrade from Apple.

I am now going to try moving it to another PCI slot. (Edit: tried re-seating the card and moving it to another slot. No luck. Also tried plugging the 2408 into different inputs on the card. Nadda  )

Any ideas on what might be the problem? Anyone ever had a card fail?

Thanks,
Leon Portelance

Okay. I tried swapping the PCI 424 with my Network card, in slot 5, the furthest from my video card in slot 1. Now it recognizes the PCI 424. Weird and annoying, but at least it is working.

Not totally fail, but there are many of us who have had it fail to be recognized on boot for unexplainable reasons. Mine hasn't done that since way back in the early days, and it usually returned on reboot (knock on wood).

Since you've moved slots, and you didn't mess with anything when it stopped working(?), it sounds a bit worse, but don't lose hope.

The failure to "see" the i/o box, and the port swapping thing, is probably different (I've had that one several times too). I think if the card works, your machine should show some sign of it somewhere, even if there are no drivers or interface boxes. I'd at least make sure that it does the same thing in a totally different computer, and with a clean (or different) driver install. If you're "lucky", maybe something screwed up slightly with the PCI bus on the host itself (if you could call that "luck"). Also, see if you can clean the card's contacts with an appropriate (safe) cleaner/solvent, maybe blow the motherboard's PCI slots out with some air, and make sure there isn't anything "broken looking" on the card itself (like those wonderful "last minute" jumper wires on mine).

You seem like you've probably tried that sort of stuff. Worst case, maybe you can just pay for one of the card upgrade deals and swap it back to them, rather than having to buy something you already owned and didn't personally destroy. I doubt the previous PCI card versions are worth much to them either way, so it probably ends up in a pile (or dumpster), or worse yet, goes back to an unfortunate someone like yourself, who's paid to have their's repaired (guess they test those first anyway).

Hope it comes out OK,

George

PS- Man, I hate thinking about that. (fingers crossed)

Since moving my card to slot 5 and re-installing the drivers, it seems to be working fine now!! :D Whew. Nothing worst than having your whole system down. Made me realize how much I depend on that sound card.

I think it was the Native Instruments Kontakt 2.1 update that caused the problem in the first place, but I am not sure of that.
