Sliding Edit Possible?
When you edit two sound bites that are flush with each other it would be great to be able to do a sliding edit where if you move one back the other stays with it and moves earlier. Is there a shortcut key to hold down or something for this? It's pretty common in video editing apps but not finding it in DP...
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Sliding Edit Possible?
I'm not sure I understand the question, but if it's simply a matter of moving two soundbites together just hold the shift key and select the soundbites you want to slide. Once selected whatever you do to one will affect the other.

You can also use the Lasso Tool (CONTROL-OPTION). That way you don't have to actually select the entire Soundbites. All you have to do is select a part of each Soundbite. Of course, you can Merge them, as well. I realize the Merge option is not always a fitting solution, depending on what you're objective is.

Re: Sliding Edit Possible?
I'll try to explain a sliding edit in more detail. You have two clips next to eachother in the sequence window:
----] [-----
You move the endpoint of clip 1 earlier or later, and clip 2's startpoint shifts (slides) as well:
------][--
or...
--][------
As it is now you have to move the first clip's endpoint and then grab the second clip's start point.

Re: Sliding Edit Possible?
Dave,
The confusion on my part is here: are you trying to move the soundbites, or are you edge-editing each of them? The advice above takes care of moving them.
If edge-editing, (which is what happens when you grab the edge of a soundbite) then you are hiding or revealing more of the parent audio file to which the bite belongs. In this case the audio retains its position but is made shorter or longer by the addition or subtraction of material if there is more available in the parent file. If this is what you want, you can make one bite longer than you really need, layer the other on top and adjust its edge. The bottom bite will be revealed or hidden by edge-editing the top one. Only what is visible will be heard. There are other ways and combinations as well, but maybe this will lead you to them. Good luck.

Re: Sliding Edit Possible?
As far as I can tell, you cannot perform slide edits in DP (other than in a two-step way like you described).
I can understand why: Common film/video NLE processes like "slides" and "ripples" are more crucial when you have long, multiple data in a single track. I'd guess that, typically speaking, most DP users don't load a ton of bites into one track. So, "sliding" bite edges in one step isn't a foremost procedural thought.
Still, if you really see the need, maybe you can petition MOTU to add a slide tool? If for no other reason than to make DP a match against ProTools in as many areas as possible.

Chrispick, exactly. For others who don't understand a sliding edit, I assure you once you have a project where you need to do fine adjustments with abutting clips it's a great and convenient time-saver. Say you lay down a track in pieces, like sometimes I'll do all the verses to stay in that 'verse groove' then I'll insert the choruses, etc. Being able to move shared edges is a great thing.

Good one, Dave. Time marches on, and DP just keeps getting better, because we continue to challenge MOTU with requests that make sense.

hi all,
i wonder if DP (4.61 or 5) has this feature...
i'm a film NLE editor so i can understand and say how much slide editing is for us... when using MOTU i wish that that feature was included too...
i would like to know if you can select all soundbites from a specific point on the timeline to shift around, without having to zoom out, highlight everything with the mouse and move.
under FCP, there's this tool (an arrow which you can toggle left or right) to select all your clips, left or right of the edit point.
thanks!

place the insertion point where you want it. Then go to the Selection fields in the Tracks Overview, and double-click either "Start" or "End." If you want more tracks selected in the same range, just shift-click on the tracks you want.

thanks

There is also the command "Select All Tracks in Range". The default key command is Option - Command - A.
Hope this helps

I'm not at the Mac right now but I believe in the commands window you can assign a key combo to "Enter insertion point in Start Time" or something like that. Just do a search in the commands window on Insertion Point and then assign a key command you like or maybe there's already one.

You can use the Selection drawer in the Control Panel -- it has the same selection items as in the Tracks Overview.tingkumajique wrote:hey Shooshie, thanks for the heads up... will try that later when i get home.Shooshie wrote:place the insertion point where you want it. Also, for on-the-fly selection, you may want to try Command-dot (number pad decimal point) to place the insertion point at the counter, then Option-Shift-Return to Grow Selection to End (of the sequence). If that doesn't exactly fit what you want, peruse the Selection part of the Commands list -- there should be enough choices there to achieve what you want.
