G4 and G5 sharing ext FW HD. Advice needed.

Post by cor »

Hello!

Thank you all about the good tips in the forum.

Setup:

G5 2*2 GHz 2,5 Gb having a 160 Gb Lacie FW HD 800 Firewire port
Os 10.4.5 and Latest version of DP.

and

G4 powerbook 1Gb.
OS 10.3.9 and latest version of DP.

Computers are in the same LAN (100MB).

I Have used this combination with my collague for multimedia production, mainly for radio jingles and programs.

All the audio is in the external lacie hard drive and both computers uses the drive same time. This has been working guite well, but some strange situations has happened. No bad crashes (only one restart needed) or loosing data ( I hope :) ).

I have logged in from the powerbook to the G5 with the same username
and mounted those partitions.

Now I have feeling that there must be more realible, faster, clever way to do this. What do you think?

Hopefully you understand my english. please, ask more if something was not clear enough.

Cheers!

Maybe it is because you are using two different OS's...maybe upgrade the PowerBook to Tiger?

When you say that you have used this configuration before, do you mean with the exact same pieces of hardware or just the same models but physicallly different computers?

Hi,

I meant that we have used and we are still using this configuration.

The setup hass been the same all the time, exept I have updated drivers and DP and OS regularly.

How does changing the OS make the difference here?

Panther & Powerbook has been good combination.

Thanks for your reply!

Maybe I don't understand? But what is your question/problem?

Is it not working?

Are you looking for a better alternative than sharing a drive?

It is working, but I might add a third computer to the system, so speed of the shared firewire drive might be a problem.

I want to keep all the audio in the same place.

Has anybody tried Lacie network drives or similar?

Now most annoying issue is when I am not logged in G5 I cannot reach
that ext. drive from powerbook.
