I'm in the middle of a fit of retardation. I've done this before but I'm a little confused. I had to unexpectedly get a new PB 15" 1.67. I backed up my old data from my older PB by creating a disk image with Carbon Copy Cloner. That was system 10.3.9. Now this new one comes with 10.4. I use 10.4.5 on my G5. Everything works fine so I see no reason to stick with 10.3.9.
What is the best way of doing this?
1. Put the old 10.3.9 system with app/docs on a firewire drive, boot from that.
2. Wipe the new drive and launch the CCC disk image on it.
3. Put the Tiger install disk in and upgrade?? Will this keep my apps and settings?
I seem to recall there's a difference between the original install disks and the upgrade disks you buy in the store.

One difference might be how old the version the OS is. Apple may restock their install discs with later versions. A computer may ship with 10.4, but a recent update disc may be 10.4.5.
I'm not sure it matters which install disc you use after the first decimal, ie: 10.4.x.x.x.x. as opposed to 10.2, 10.3, etc.
If you are up for a major hd backup and drive-wipe, that would certainly be good housekeeping. Some people recommend doing that from time to time as a matter of good computer hygiene. I've never done it and have had no major problems-- except when I forgot to export my address book, bookmarks, and PASSWORDS first!! Yikes.
Some people say a total drive-wipe is not necessary the way it was in OS 9. OS X is partially self-maintaining and better designed to remain stable even when docs or apps are corrupted.
You just may want to check out the Tiger install docs, including Mac 101 which talks about preparing your computer for Tiger.
