Meters moving, but no audio...

Post by James Treichler »

I open a song in DP 4.61, I press play, I see the meters move, but no audio (actually, sometimes the meters don't move, even when I know there should be audio). I know my output and monitors are fine because I can playback audio through iTunes. It would seem to me that upon opening DP, the audio files or the interface are not being seen. I'm running a RME Fireface for all input/output. I currently have everything working, but the only way to fix this problem is to continually restart my RME until DP finally recognizes a change...I'm hoping that there's a better method? Thanks for the help!

Just a thought. Do you have the latest drivers for you interface? Is everything set up properly in Audio/MIDI Setup?

I know I have the latest drivers... as far at the audio setup; I can only assume that the setup is correct because everything works fine at times. When everything decides to work, there are no problems. It appears as though DP decides to not recognize the RME Fireface. Is there a proper procedure for turning on the Fireface, DP, computer? It seems that sometimes I'll have DP open, then I'll turn on the Fireface and I get no reaction from DP; then, sometimes I will get a reaction (i.e. little colored gear turning) and this is when the playback will work. Now that I have things working, I just don't shut down anything; but, I get frightened thinking about having this problem occur when I have clients standing behind me.

I use an 828 mk11 interface, and I know that turning it on and off when DP is running is asking for trouble. I always fire up my DP project last in the chain.

When you can't hear audio within DP, do your other audio apps still work? (Quicktime player, Windows media player, Peak, other sound editors, Reason etc). If you change DP over to MIDI only, can you hear your MIDI instruments? Is it strictly a digital audio problem? Could you beg, borrow, steal or rent another audio interface? That way you can eliminate a whole bunch of possibilities in one swoop.

I'd be stripping everything back to the bare bones, and getting down to the lowest common denominator. Disconnect everything from your Fireface, disable all your plugs, and then start the fun process of elimination.
It could be something as simple as a dodgy firewire lead. Or maybe trashing DP prefs, or reinstalling DP.

I feel your pain with the client thing. Hope you zap the problem before it zaps you. I'm sure the combined experience of the Unicornation Whiz Kids will help you to sort it asap.

Good luck,

Geoff

I would always recommend switching on Fireface before launching DP, but probably best before booting Mac.
