most stable system

Post by gaucho »

what's the verdict on the most stable mac OS / DP combination?

I'm fairly stable with OS10.3.7 and DP 4.52, so I'm reluctant to budge. I'm hearing good things from some of you regarding the stability of 4.61. WHat OS does it play best with?

I'm runnin' DP 4.61 and OS 10.4.5 and I'm gettin' no problems. (Crap! I gotta stop writing or saying things like that out loud. My luck can only last so long.)
Yeah, even with my relatively slow processor, I'm doin' ok. I don't do a lot of multiple input recording. Lots of MIDI and one or two tracks at a time. I'm salivating at getting that Sonnet dualie, though! :D

For me DP4.61 and OSX 10.3.9 is so stable it's got straw on the ground.

Am still relectant to move to 10.4 because of it - edit: not because of DP specifically .... just because of *everything*

4.61 and 10.4.5 works great on Quad G5. Rewire BFD, Stylus and Kompact are coexisting happily with Waveshell and Altiverb. Updated to the new Universal Firewire Driver and the punch in pedal on my 828mkII works for the first time on this new machine.

10.4.5 with DP 4.61 is working "about" as well as DP 3.11 did in OS9. I had so much fun with that version. Of course, DP 4.x has features that 3.x did not, and I certainly don't miss dealing with the Extensions Manager or allocating RAM. But for stability, I couldn't be happier.

I started back on system 6 and have used every version of Performer, DP and ProTools since then.
4.61 with 10.3.9 has been the most stable platform I've ever run.

I don't know what the most stable combo is, but I'm running DP 4.61 on OS 10.4.5 on a G5 2.0 dual and all's pretty cool for me.

Installed 10.4 shortly after it came out, I've been wondering lately if I should have stayed with 10.3.9. Multitasking seemed to work better in 10.3, easier on resources. Dashboard gets old after a short while, Spotlight is badly implemented and buggy (searching for an invisible item called /bin still gets no results....). RSS is also available in Firefox (or dedicated apps), Nisus Thesaurus can replace Dictionary,...

Ditto, though I skipped OS9 entirely.

The stability I experience now is comparable to my most stable OS7.1/DP1.7 combo, but of course no comparison in functionality. PLUS, back then you really had to clean out EVERYTHING else and run a computer essentially dedicated to music only, whereas now I have internet, graphic programs, word processors, web design apps, you name it, peacefully existing side-by-side, Yessir, we CAN indeed ALL get along.....!!!!

10.3.9 and 4.61, rock-solid combo for me (knock on wood...)

Anyone know if the stability of 4.61 and 10.3.9 applies to the 1.25 Ghz Powerbooks (single processor) as well?

Interesting thread, mabey I can get some advice,
Got my PMac Dual 2.5 dec 05, it came w/Panther installed. Disks that came with it, OSx 10.39 and 10.4...I installed 10.4 thinking the newest should be the best??

I just purchased an RME FF800, and a Lacie FW external HDD...I don't want to run them both from the MAC, planning to run the FF off of the Mac, and am looking for a decent pci-x firewire card to run the external drive. In the past week, Ive stopped at 2 well known computer shops looking for a card, and either these people havent a clue, or Im speaking a foriegn language.
Any advice on where/what card would be needed? Id like a card w/ an 800 and a 400 or 2...

Also have bumped mem to 3.5, will go higher as funds permit.
Was also hoping DP5.0 would be out by the time I got this together, but its looking like I will have to go 4.6.

Im fairly new to this forum, but I have to say that the advice and responses Ive read on here are by far the most intelligent Ive seen anywhere. It really is refreshing. Thanks, AD.

Hi Hopiway,

As some ppl report good things about the newest Tiger 10.4.5 version with DP 4.61, what was the last Tiger's version you've tested before stepping back to Panther 10.3.9 ?

Perhaps this thread could be more exhaustive with everyone's specs system... Often, system's issues are inherent to the use of multiple musical applications (DP, Live...), 3rd party plug-ins, audio interface & drivers AND dsp cards (I own 4 uad cards).

Thanks.

Anyone using 4.61 with Tiger 10.4.5 and DAE? I'm getting wierdness like plug ins not displaying and other stuff under 10.3.8 and thinking of updating.
The Bride of Frankenstien is tracking well with 3 GB ram on my Dual 1.8
with and HD3 system but I'm ready to trash DP for the lag in productivity.
The wheel when moving tracks; no show/hide of tracks? MOTU cannot keep saying "Look for a forthcoming update..." forever. Thanks for the info on
"most stable". It's given me direction...
