difference between OMF transfer and Digi Translator?

Post by ryst »

I am curious about this. Does anyone know the specific differences of what OMF files contain and do not contain when transferring the OMF project from DP to PT as opposed to Digi Translator? If someone has a list of differences that would be great. I can't find one yet.

Ok. I just found some info and now I am really confused. I don't use pro tools so bare with me here. If I save a DP project as an OMF file, can PT not open the OMF file without Digitranslator??? I thought DT was for more complicated file transfers. I thought it was possible to exchange OMF files between the two programs?

Nope, you need Digitranslator to open/save OMF files in PT. DP has the same thing built in as I understand it.

So basically DP can import and open OMF files but PT needs DigiTranslator to do it?

If you can still run OS 9, there's a tiny program called OMFTool, which will take the OMF you create in DP, and convert it to a Pro Tools v.4 session file, which any Pro Tools system can open (and then save as whatever version it wants it to be.) I haven't heard of an OSX version of OMF Tool, Maybe there is one, out there, guys?

Wasn't that only for 16 bit projects?

think it runs in classic... maybe I will try installing it on my laptop - must be worth a try cos -

Digitranslator2 is hilariously overpriced.... only it's not funny if you need it...

Not sure if does do 24 bit - assuming not ... could you not fool protools by making it 16 bit OMF first then force it to relink to the 24 bit media?

That is correct and falls right in line with the Digidesign / Avid moto of "make them pay up the wazzu for absolutely every little feature."

 :)

don't forget to toss in the extra 100 if you want to bounce to mp3 in PT
