Kernal Panic,any suggestions?

Post by kgdrum »

hi ,i have been having a smooth ride on my new G5 the last few months until the last few days.3 days ago i had my 1st Kernal panic rebooted computer ,repaired permissions and everything seemed fine the last few days, then this morning after i closed DP i had another kernal panic, and could not get system to reboot,so i shut down.(i guess it's time for Diskwarior tonight)last week i added a M audio 88 key controller to the system,it is running off of a powered USB hub, can having the keyboard not powered directly off of mac USB cause a kernal panic?would keyboard usb coming off monitor's USB be better or should i have his directly off mac... thanks KG

Kernel panics are often hardware related. As a first step, I'd suggest you unplug all peripherals, to see if the Mac boots. If it doesn't, remove any third party RAM, and try booting up again.

Further troubleshooting tips can be found here.

Just a thought here:

I don't have an M audio 88 key controller however I have learned that some M-Audio USB gear I have is very fussy and do not like to be plugged into a USB hub.

For example my M-Audio midiSport 8x8 can't handle the flow of MIDI data unless I plug it directly into my Mac and if I don't it will get that black curtain of death.

Perhaps your manual does or does not warn you about where your M audio 88 key controller should be plugged in.

That might be machine specific. I run a bunc hof M-Audio stuff off of hubs and have on a variety of Macs (G5 Dual 2.0;G4QSilver, PPC 9500, 7600, MiniMac, etc.) and they have never been a problem in terms of kernal panics. They used to disappear from time to time, but that has not happened since upgrading to a G5.
