8 GB Ram upgrade worth it???

Post by Bomberstudios »

There is already 4.5 GB in the Dual G5 2.5 GHz and I'm wondering if maxing it out to 8 GB would make any improvement.

Mach5 is the only VI right now - and puts a considerable load on the system (keeps the CPU bubbling at 30-40%). The buffer is set at 128 on the PCI-424; I know that's small but 256 has too much latency.

I'm thinking about adding Real Guitar and BFD Drums, but having those VI's open along with Mach5 --- I don't know if the G5 can handle it... I don't want to print tracks because that isn't very flexible during composing process.

I've thought about Quad G5, but it's PCI Express and that's not an option with PCI 424. Plus, that's an expensive option - sell the dual, buy the quad, add memory... Sell 2408mk3, but a firewire audio interface...

I have a dual 1.8 with 3 gig of ram and I have no problems blowing away what you are talking about. I can have a project with MachFive, Ivory, BFD, Trilogy, B4II and Arturia Minimoog V with no overload. (that's just off the top of my head, I know I've pushed the system way passed this before). Not sure why 256 is too much latency. I'm a pianist and play Ivory live at 256 without a hitch, and actually have moved to 512 lately and barely a difference.

Your machine should have plenty of power for Real Guitar, BFD and MachFive.
