I like the e-verb very much. It is interesting when I listen to some acostic stuff. I tell him that I like the ambience, and he tells me that he used the DUY verb on the master.
To my ears, the Altiverb (haven't used the other convolution verbs, yet) is the only one verb sounding real, but sometimes maybe it is because I can see what I'm using.
It is a one band side of the computer recording...

copy the track you want to send to the outboard verb, nudge it earlier in time by the amount of your system's latency, send the copied track to outboard unit. This should cover it.

If the original poster is doing classical music, I see zero alternatives outside an impulse reverb. That means Altiverb and that new one from Waves, the IR-1. Note that there is a "Lite" version of the IR-1, for half the price of the original. It has the same sound, but fewer controls. Even then, it's $400. ($300 from Sweetwater)

I don't know which of the other reverbs out there are sampling reverbs, or "impulse" or "convolution." But those types are the only ones I believe are suitable for simulating classical spaces.

I've experimented endlessly with eVerb, TrueVerb, and RennVerb. They just don't do the trick. I used to use RealVerb, which was offered for OS9 as a Native plugin, and it was actually pretty good. But still, it's not as good as Altiverb or IR-1, and not by a long shot.

The best cheap reverb I've used is actually free: Apple's Matrix Reverb, which comes installed with OSX. I get decent results from it, though I can sometimes surpass it in TrueVerb or RennVerb. I have never been able to get acceptable results from eVerb. Period. But that's because I'm looking to duplicate the sound of real space. eVerb just doesn't do that. It's a spatial enhancer for tracks buried in the mix. If you're looking for something about as effective as the reverb on a Fender amplifier, then eVerb is your man. But if you're trying to dupicate the sound of a concert hall, forget it.

You can use a delay compensator plug. I have the UAD plugs and use the DelayComp to offset the other tracks so that the return from my hardware verb (Lexicon MPX1) is in time. The DelayComp in UAD was actually for plugin delay compensation prior to DP 4.5 with ADC, but it works like a charm for hardware. Of course, you may not have UAD - the TC PowerCore also has something similar, but I'm sure there are similar delay comps out there as standalone plugs.....just a thought.

This is my experience as well.

If orchestral, go convolution. It's the best solution for simulating real world reverberation.

I do think the $145 SpinAudio RoomVerb sounds pretty good for what it is. Doesn't sound anything like a real sampled space, like Altiverb does, but it does have a decent "width" and "smoothness" for what I consider to be a rackmount sim. And it's nicely adjustable.

If you are going to go external, check out Expert Sleepers Latency Fixer. It reports latency to DP's ADC and will bump the track forward by the specified amount in either samples or milliseconds. It's free!

ADC is great, but would that matter if you use a Reverb plug...?
It is supposed to be delayed! ya?

Ya! That's why I've never had an issue with it. I normally use predelay anyway.

Re: high quality reverb

Thank you everyone, These last few posts have really given me alternatives to explore. I just rearanged my whole living space last night into a mixing space - even set up my Wilson CUB speakers since I got them "cheap" from the studio I work at. Everything sounds sweet so far. I will look to see if the captured room is enough and then try to spice it with everb. If this fails I will set up my old Lexicon 100 and run analog lines with one of the suggested latency plugs mentioned here. If this doesn't work, I have been reading the sites and believe that alitverb is going to fit my needs - real world acoustic space similation.

BTW Magic Dave - true, Lexicon does tend to go dark wih their presets but that is what is so great about them - the tweak capability over the duration of the reverb - especially with the 480 or 960. I usually increase the High Freq Cut Off to keep things warm, as I usually find myself in a church with a lot of stone. But what you can achieve with this gear is amazing - no wonder it costs almost 20 grand.

I will let everyone know what I have done and perhaps post a few before - after clips somewhere for you all to hear.

Cheers. :p

More often than not, I still use my old Lexicon 200. It was $4800.00 retail when I bought it about 20 years ago and still sounds phenominal! I connect it to my 828 MK2 and the latency is not an issue at all. I don't know of anyone that doesn't have some predelay in their reverb settings. Ultimately every sound that is in the final mix is there because we put it there. It is up to your own ears to decide what works and what doesn't.
Just set the predelay on your external reverb to the amount that sounds good.

Simple, don't get all wrapped up in the slight latency issue with reverb.

I love to use my TC M-2000 using SPDIF with my 828 II. It doesn't eat CPU and it sounds great.
But, I would love to know if there is a way to insert an EQ plug-in to the E-Verb without affecting the sound of the original track?

cool splinter, thanks for the link.
I am rather anal about the predelay for verbs, so this may do the trick. Otherwise setting up the other tracks to a buss (out/in) is somewhat of a PITA.

BTW, how are you dudes dealing with the levels w/ outboard verbs?
I seem to add @ 4-8dbs(send) for a good print/resolution for the "verb mix". Or do you just trim it up afterwards?

Well, you'd make an aux send, insert your eVerb plug there, crank the reverb to 100% wet, then insert the EQ either before or after the eVerb. This way you only color the wet signal. And you use the send volumes to mix it in. Right?
