No Virtual Instruments included with DP?????

Post by kapman001 »

So, I purchased DP a little over a month ago as an upgrade from Logic Express and Pro Tools LE to be able to mix in surround. Today I decided to bring out my M-Audio Keystation 49e to test out DP's Virtual Instruments... and to my suprise there are none?? Does DP just not come with any or did I do something wrong or miss something??? Please help!!

Current versions of DP do not ship with virtual instruments. However, the upcoming version 5 will.

well damn... that sure is a let down... esp. since logic won't let you load it's instruments in any other program...

Here's some information. Can't wait until this comes out.

And here is an amazing soft synth for free to hold you over:

I know that anyone who bought DP AFTER the NAMM announcement will get DP5 for free or for less than the upgrade of those who bought before NAMM. This may indeed go according to registration. Contact MOTU and ask them.

sorry to be an ass, but why did you think it came with some? the box and literature never mentioned anything about VI's being included. Just wondering...
I too look forward to DP5, but oddly, not for VI's-just fixes.

I bought DP because I wanted the best DAW. I buy my VSTis because they are the best at what they do - Atmosphere, Stylus RMX, Stormdrum, GPO and JABB, B4, etc. These are real VSTis, not some freebie incentives. Those instruments in Logic aren't bad, but they don't hold a candle, IMHO. If I were on Logic, I'd still have to buy every one of my VSTis anyway.

Buy a tool for the tool, not the free flashlight and decoder ring. :)

If you want to fork out $1000 to MOTU for DP & a few VIs
...you will do okay...not as many VIs as you get with LOGIC
but you get bit higher quality for the few that you get for that
amount...

I have both DAWs -- One's tastes and wants may vary ;-)

As others have said, DP5 will have bundled VI's. For now, if you don't already have it, this is a top notch VI (free):

Thanks

Thanks again to everyone that has posted. I think for now I will continue using reason. Haha.. kind of wish I would have waited another month to buy DP so I would be able to get the free upgrade to 5!

Nothing wrong with Reason, especially when rewired into DP.

I'd check out the free Automat like gearboy suggested. It's a great little synth at an unbeatable price.

There's also Crystal from greenoaks software. A pretty phenomonal little synth.

If you have reason, you should look at rewiring that to DP. Rewire in DP is well implemented.

DP's lack of included VIs has never been a factor for me. For anyone doing music for a living the cost of good buying VIs is relatively minimal. It's just the price of doing business. Some of Logic's VIs are ok but none of them are first-call imo. Whenever I work in Logic I always end up using the same VIs I use in DP.

I suppose MOTU had to add VIs to it's bundle to compete, but if they're not better than the ones included in Logic they won't effect me much.

I could be wrong, but buying a DAW for the free VIs would be a bit like buying a DAW for the free compressor and EQ. Sure, fine, ok. Maybe that suits some folks. But I'd have to buy my Waves plugins no matter what, to get the quality of compressors and EQ that I want. When DPs VIs come out with v5.0, I'll probably try them out. Maybe I'll even like them. But I don't see them replacing Akoustik Piano, Ivory, Mach Five, and MOTU Symphonic Instrument, much less the primo VIs like Kontakt-2. At best, they fill in some gaps, or they act as surrogates until you can afford the best; same as those in Logic.

But who knows? We may get lucky and find that these are the Holy Grail of Virtual Instruments, and all of a sudden everyone will be switching to Digital Performer just for the chance to use them.

hehehe...

But I'm not holding my breath... ;)
