Powerbook - use external hard drive for audio and samples?

Post by artfarm1 »

Hi,

Im going to get a Powerbook to duplicate some work...

Can I successfully use an external firewire drive for both audio and my Mach 5 samples?

Do I need two external drives?

Just keep my DP and Mach 5 applications on internal drive?

Any suggestions most helpful! Thanks all.

dunno bout mac drive speeds, but ideally you should use 7200 speed drives for audio and samples (unless you have massive ram memory so can load it all in ram).

I ended up opting for a spare battery in my HP Centrino's spare slot rather than a 2nd drive soley because the drives they had for that slot were only 5400. Course I get 6 hours continual music usage now, so am quite happy.

If you need to continually load from disk, then separating your samples from your app by using separate drives is probably a good idea, tho am sure another can confirm that.

Sarcazm,

I agree. I use a Powerbook with MachFive & DP 4.61. I use an external Glyph Firewire drive. I've placed my MachFive Sounds Folder on the external drive. I've had sesssions of about 16 tracks 44.1/24 bit and used 6 live MachFive Instruments and things where just fine. A second drive is definately the way to go.
