moving beat markers to reflect a realtime performance?

Hi all --

This is kind of a newbie question, but I can't seem to figure it out -- I recorded a MIDI performance (ignoring the MIDI tempo) of a song that i want to use as a sort of conductor track, so now i want to basically move the beat markers around and have DP calculate the resulting tempo changes. So 2 questions --

1) I was in the sequence view, and i went to Project > Modify Conductor Track > Adjust Beats , which brought up a window where i checked "drag beats in graphic editor" and "preserve realtime performance" and set the Adjust parameter to "beats". Then I would go back to the graphic editor and try to drag the beats up top above the conductor track (where the play marker usually goes), but every time i would click there, i'd get a message that said "The sequence must be in conductor track mode to adjust beats. To change this, play enable the sequence and use the 'tempo control' popup to switch modes." Well, to the best of my understanding, the sequence is already play enabled, and i can't find the "tempo control popup" anywhere. How do I switch modes?

2) Is there a better way to achieve this?

Interesting. Never tried that but Nueno & cuebase sx does it easily. They call it time warp.

I would like some shortcuts to how this is easioly done in DP as well.

At the top right corner of the transport control pane (where you press play/stop/record etc) there is a small triangle. Repeated clicking of this will bring up various control panes - one of them being the tempo control pop up pane.

I must admit to boughts of frustration as, like you, I couldn't remember where the heck it was.

Also check out the "Extract Tempo from MIDI" in the REGION menu it might do what you want - BUT I THINK YOU WILL HAVE TO BE CONDUCTOR TRACK MODE (once again available in the tempo control pane)

thanks, that did the trick. i knew it would be something fairly obvious -- i'll post again later with my experience using this to make a tempo map.

Another way to do it is the "Record Beats" function, where you just tap along to the performance w/ any key on your MIDI keyboard. It works really good for rubato passages, or any performance that you played in yourself, or you're really familiar with. The conductor track reflects the tempo changes per beat, and then you can tweak them individually. Very quick to make a tempo map from a live performance, in my opinion.

cool, i'll try the record beats function on my next project. for this one i tried moving the beats around, but i had to finish this so quickly i didn't want to start quantizing stuff anyway, so i ended up just recording acoustic piano audio without regard to MIDI tempos and beats, and just adding MIDI stuff on top of that. i definitely have some more work to do before i can use the features of MIDI and dp in an actually musical way. thanks for everyone's help. i'm sure i'll be posting again.
