Configuring a headphone correction system on DP11

Post by AppleTwo »

Hi guys

i just recently decided to experiment with Sienna Reference, the headphone correction software which sounds really good and looks very promising for mixing/mastering on headphones.

I was trying to figure out how to route the thing in DP11, because in other DAW they do have like monitoring busses (reaper) orwhich are not goint obe included in the bounced file.
That's helpful to basically use the correction software while mixing etc, but not affecting the master file once exported.

I also tried to simply put Sienna reference on the master bus, but the reality is: the correction works best when fed with a non-zeroed seignal, meaning: I need to attenuate the monitoring signal at least by 6DB in order to let thecorrection software to run properly, and that's not really ideal when it comes to decide the final levels of the master file which most likely will need to be full range.

Anybody has some experience with those headphone plugins and how to set those in DP11?

Thanks.

I use Realphones (for 2.0) and Sienna Sphere ( for 5.1 and up) SystemWide
Just send out DP to SystemWide

You’ve not told us how you monitor over headphones and speakers. This is important.

There are some apps including Audio Hijack that let you incorporate plug-ins in System Audio on a Mac. There’s a free one also but I no longer recall the name. You can set this up in an Aggregate Device so that the plug-in is always on when you monitor anything through headphones and switch out when you don’t need it for listening to your speakers. I use the Slate VSX for phones and have it set this way. DP is unaffected.

I also have the IK ARC 4 system for my speakers. I could set it up in another Aggregate Device and switch between the two in Audio MIDI Setup. Since I also have the ARC box, the settings are stored there so it’s not an issue.

There are ways to set this up for the headphone feed of many interfaces. Others cannot accommodate this except by incorporating the output in DP and switching it off when bouncing the mix.

I track with my ‘phones plugged into my interface. Since I’m not mastering, I don’t need VSX which is good since none of my current interfaces have a way to incorporate plug-ins on input.

I have my DP template set up with a Monitor Bus, so I can use room correction software without worrying about polluting the Mix Bus. The key is to bus all audio to a bus (mine is labeled "Record Bus") that is then used as the source for both the Mix Input and Monitor Input.

My setup is basically bused as follows:

Track>(appropriate) Submaster Bus>Master Bus>Record Bus>(Mix Input and) Monitor Input>Audio Interface Output>Monitor Controller>Headphones and Speakers.

On the Monitor Bus, you can put a Trim plugin ahead of the headphone tuning plugin and use the Trim plugin to attenuate the level to optimal.
