Cant get Instrument Track to trigger via MIDI

Juist getting back into DP, used to use it heavily years ago... but i cant seem to figure out how to get my Akai MPKmini+ keyboard [connected via USB] to play any sounds. ive read the manual for setting it up, in the MIDI monitor i can see channel 1 for the keys light up and 10 for the pads... and input is defaulted to 'any' without multi record selected. have tried multirecord with 1 and 10 chosen and that doesnt work either. oddly, i can map the keyboard to plugin knobs so i know its working. also the keyboard works fine in Luna. i feel like im missing something to select. i have tried to add it via bundles which just changes the name in MIDI monitor but have done that. also looked at audio MIDI setup and added it in there and ran i/o to its own interface.

i know its got to be user error but also shouldnt be this difficult to put on an instrument track and get a note to play either.

What version of DP are you using? Things may have changed with combined MIDI/Instrument tracks:

using DP11, its 11.33. ive added Instrument and tried through that, as well as adding MIDI track to the instrument track like i used to do in the old days. ive been using DP since it was just a MIDI app back in the 90s. just been a minute since i have used it last. around 2003ish Mac dropped PCI slots and rendered MOTU audio interfaces useless so i switched to PC and Nuendo. DP wasnt out on Windows at the time. so trying to get back into it again, so instrument tracks are new to me, used to use MTPAV and MIDI cables. had a whole network of synths and sound samples, keyboards etc.

just cant imagine what im missing here. especially when it just works fine in Luna.

What macOS? What Mac? Have you allowed DP to use the microphone?

m4 mini pro, sequoia 15.2. yes, DP has access to microphone. not sure why that would be pertinent but at this point anything could be.

Are the outputs of the track legit bundles? (i.e not italicized). Do you see any outputs in the Meter Bridge?

Check the Input Filter under the Setup menu. If the Akai is configured as a Control Surface, remove that config. A couple of things to look at.

not configured as a control surface [in that section, nothing is there. i dont have my ICONs set up currently] yes, outputs are to my UAD apollo x8p. i can "play" the keyboard in the MIDI editor and manually add notes in there which play the output. but i cant seem to connect the MIDI output of the keyboard to the instrument and have it record or play [it is record enabled]

That’s an Apple issue. All audio apps require this.

Have you scheduled a support call with MOTU? They can screen share.

messing around a little more today. so i can RECORD MIDI to the track. i just cant hear what i am playing. this has to be something stupid i am missing, user error. when i play it back it plays. so MIDI note info is coming in correct from keyboard, plays back correct so instrument track is working, i just cant monitor input??? Luna has a button next to record on mixer for input monitoring. does DP have similar now?

Try Preferences and Settings>MIDI Options>MIDI Patch Thru mode:>Auto channelize

Yes!!! Thank you. I had tried that before but assumed just clicking it and not getting out of prefs would enable it. This time hit done and worked. Knew it was something simple I was overlooking.

Glad it worked. That's one of those "Set it and forget it" prefs that I look at about every 20 years or so.
