I heard from a very reliable source that anything EXCEPT the single 1.6 GHz will show a significant performance improvement from a G4.
Reason being: the single 1.6 was the first G5, and most of the internal bus architecture is the same as a G4. That chokes down most of the performance improvements the G5 is supposed to give you.
Shoot for a single 1.8 GHz or higher.

Problem with that assesment is they were comparing it to a Dual 1.42 G4. If he has a Dual 533 and wants to upgrade, a Single 1.6 G5 is just fine.mesasand wrote:I heard from a very reliable source that anything EXCEPT the single 1.6 GHz will show a significant performance improvement from a G4.

I have a single 1.6 (check the signature) and we use it to run reason Dp 4.61,Logic 7 etc.. runs just fine we added a 2nd drive to it for performance and the unit runs great... Much better than my Dual 867 G4, also the G5 .6 has PCI-X if I recall which was not available in a G4....
Also the buss speed was FASTER than A g4 so if the architecture is so similar they messed up in a few areas, eh?
