Windows software 828 & 2408 MK III

Post by NoFi Audio »

I have a pair of 828s installed and working. If I add the PCIe 424 and a 2408 MKIII do I need a different s/w or driver package or will the existing MOTU Audio Installer pick up the new equipment?

Thanks,
S~

The 2408 also uses takes the MOTU Audio Installer. Since neither interface is supported, the download pages do not show the current build. You can find this on the page for the 828mk3 Hybrid.

Thanks Mike... I plan on digging into this after work tonight. Will be interesting to see how the 2408 gets identified - the 828s come up as UNIT 1 & UNIT 2, but not in the order I'd have preferred (which I've since learned that the ID is hardcoded into the firmware and not changeable). It would be beneficial for me (and all my channel patching I don't particularly want to redo), if adding the 2408 didn't disturb the existing enumeration. I guess I'll find out soon enough. LOL

So, it looks like at the moment I have a bit of an issue . The PCIe card is working fine. The 2408 is working fine ( i think.. I haven't piped any audio through it, but it responds).

My issue seems to be maybe not specifically with the hardware and drivers, but how Presonus Studio One sees the MOTU devices. I pulled up a projecrt I was working on, and it loads the MOTU Audio fine ( that would be the 2 828s). Channels 9- 16 aren't available, that's where the 3rd 828 was, and they should be assigned to the 2408. But the 2408 isn't present... that is until I switch to MOTU PCI. Then I only see the 2408 In/Out. 1 -8 and 17 - 24 aren't available, becuase they are on MOTU AUDIO, the 2 828s.

Is this a case where I need to route the 828 In and Out via ADAT to the 2408 B and C ADAT? Or is this a configuration that just isn't meant to work together?

On a Mac, you can create an Aggregate Device. Not so easy on Windows. You can try using the 2408 in Stand Alone Mode and daisy-chain into one of your 828s and see what happens.

I have a couple older 2408s (they have RCA connects) I know they work, one has to be set an ingest and one output. I had everything balanced, and all my cabling is rather well managed, rather not go back to that..

Turning into a bigger rabbit hole again though. A problem I had, and got rid of (audio cutting out ever few seconds), is back. This isn't the same dropping out due to heat, it's a driver issue. I had it before. May have to look for one of the older versions.

I was thinking of trying to migrate to the MOTU PCI profile, which meant that I'd need to use the 2408 MKIII as the hub, for lack of a better term. So running 828#1 into ADAT bank B and 828 #2 into ADAT bank C. Tried that already and didn't get the results I was expecting.

For now I've pullled the PCI card and diconencted the 2408MKIII until I can get the 828s behaving again. I might just try and find another 828... they're around...

A while back I had been using a pair of older 2408s, they were unbalanced, with RCA connections for IN/OUT. One was set to ingest, one was set to playback. This worked, but there were level discrepancies. But I was familiar with making it work via ADAT.

With the new(er 2408 MKIII I've set it up the same way as my previous older 2408s, but only for playback. Set up in standale mode and connected to one of my 828s, I get back to 24 channels to my console. I can live with this for now as I rarely record through ch 9 - 16 anyways. Eventually when I find another 828 I'll get back to that, but this gets me back to work. I'll put the PCIe card away for a rainy day, or in the event I come across a 24IO reasonable......
