Undo and plug-ins

Post by juan_alexei »

Hi!

This may be a dumb question, but does DP records changes to mix settings in the undo?
For instance the level of each track, or the parameters of MW eq ?

I was surprised not to find those in my project history.

Best,

Your observations are correct. DP will Undo Record, adding/deleting plug-ins and tracks etc. but only at the macro level.

Likewise, Redo is quite flawed and sometimes doesn't work at all. When that happens, I quit without Save so that I can just roll back to a previous point. I forget how many versions back it was sice this last worked as advertised.

Yeah, I can’t keep it straight. Accidental fader moves aren’t there either. One reason to use mix layers and save mix versions.

I use Redo constantly - we all do, don’t we? I’ve never had any problem with it. What flaws are you seeing, Mike?

Neither of you worked for my last client who never seemed to be able to make up his mind. At a certain point on two songs, Redo stopped working—and, no, I wasn't counting the layers of Undo where I encountered this. The workaround was simple enough—fire up the last Autosave or the one before that and tell him that this was where we were restarting.

Must’ve been an issue with that particular project I’m guessing. I have had DP crash while going backward and forward in the Undo History, but an unreliable simple Undo/Redo would be a major bug in the program. Any app would be pretty useless without it.

Nah. I just duplicated it on an unrelated project. I don't know what the magic number is but I made 20 changes, ran Undo 19 times and Redo was unable to handle it. I gave DP plenty of time to process.

Now we would rarely encounter a situation like that which is why I never sent it into Support.

Oh, I see. I thought you were saying just toggling Undo/Redo was failing. I didn't understand that you were going back that far in the Undo history. I just tested a very simple operation and Redo had no problem redoing more levels than that, but with more complex operations in the Undo History I can imagine things might get hincky redoing that many levels

Interesting I didn't see any reference to mix layers. Forget me if I sound a novice mixer (I am :) ) What's that thing?

I get around fader moves not being undo-able by only adjusting track volume inside of plugins. Usually it's a VU meter or an eq etc, or often it'll be whatever's inserted last on the track if it has a dependable output gain control.

I keep a variety of gain plugins installed for this purpose since the MOTU Trim plugin is buggy. Not every other gain plugin out there will automate well in DP so while this kinda sounds like nothing it's actually something lol.

Airwindows has the worst UI's but their EveryTrim automated great for this purpose. Sometimes I use their PurestGain or BitShiftGain if I don't need to automate.

Ahhh DP :banghead:

One of the weirdest for me is Spectrasonics' stuff.

If I am in the VI and hit down-arrow by mistake, it changes the patch.

I've made this mistake SO many times, and lost that one "magic" patch that is making a piece of music work.

And Omnisphere for instance has like a zillion patches, all obviously totally tweak-able.

I have to load and go into an earlier DP save, if possible, to find the name of the patch, or save the modified patch then back to the current version of the project.

This has bitten me before too. Spectrasonics really should make this a pref, or at least make patch changes Undoable. Almost every other action in Omnisphere is Undoable, but not patch changes :(
