8Pre backorder: When might they be available?

Post by Filote »

Hey folks,

As of 9/5/24, the 8Pre has been backordered for a loooong time. Does anyone have any idea when MOTU might release them again?

Searching for "8Pre backorder" & other terms yielded nothing useful, so (Hopefully) this is a new Question.

I now have an 8Pre, and MkIII, and need to add another 8 channels. Love that 8Pre!

Thanks for any info...

I went my MOTU's site and noticed they have two products called 8pre. They have the 3pre es and the 8pre USB. I'm guessing it's the 8pre es that is backordered. There's something strange it seems to me going on in the supply chain where I'm wondering if MOTU interfaces that support AVB are the ones that are out of stock and perhaps there's a chip requires for those that are in short supply? Made me wonder if that's why MOTU released the new 828 that has NO AVB connectivity?

Some of that AVB stuff has been out of stock for like 5 years now heh. I had the 828es on my 'wishlist' at Sweetwater for about that long, waiting for it to show up again, when the new one finally came out and I deleted it.

I can't find anything about one in particular now, but I remember seeing somewhere or other that one of the factories that caught fire in Japan was one of their suppliers. Always assumed that was MOTU's source and couldn't get more, but I cant find anything aside from the info on AKM's fire in 2020 (which really hurt RME and others for awhile) and there was that Renesea factory fire, but they're the ones that took down the auto industry. AKM only makes A/D, D/A chips as far as I can see, and MOTU's AVB lineup all used ESS just like the current ones so it couldn't be them..

Yeah... I just wonder if there's some sort of specialized AVB chip that they can't get. I really couldn't figure out why MOTU would release a new 828 model and just drop AVB. :?:

Yes, they are selling (and have inventory) the USB AVB Interfaces like the 24 ai and ao, but none of the Thunderbolt AVB Intefaces are available.

The return to CueMix with the new (USB only) 828 is puzzling.

I ordered an LP32 more than 2 months ago, and that too has been backordered. Something is going on. :(

Weird I've been eyeing that one too, thinking about just replacing the 828x with another Ferrofish Pulse and going that route. Sweetwater runs out of it now and then, but that's one of the few AVB units that they have consistently had in stock this whole time (but they always seem to have a low stock of them). They've had the 24i/o in stock forever, but the whole 'buy one for inputs, one for outputs' doesn't seem to be too popular when you can get any one of their other interfaces for about $500 more with a full compliment of I/O.

Crap maybe I will have to think about the Digiface now, but the LP32 was cheaper and had better features like WC and an actual volume knob for the headphone jack. The Digiface used to be the cheaper of the two but over the last year it jumped up over it.

Got a reply from MOTU. It seems that they are having issues with the supply chain, the LP32 is backordered and they have no ETA.

I was looking for a MOTU 8A back in May of 2023. There were none to be found. It is still marked out of stock at Sweetwater and several other vendors. I'm surprised Motu hasn't given up on that chip set.

Here's a link to that discussion:
