2408 MK3 as ADAT Expansion

Post by thracks »

I don't know why I sat on this for so long, but I was looking through my closet of old gear and saw my 2408MK3 sitting on the shelf with the ADAT logo staring at me. I switched to an 828x years ago to get away from PCI interfaces due to switching to a laptop. It never occurred to me I could simply plug an ADAT cable between the two and gain 8 channels of audio in. I set this up last weekend and it worked flawlessly. I now use the 2408 to pipe in 8 discrete analog audio channels from a multi-out drum machine (RD-9)

I bought my original 2408 in 1998 to use as a stand-alone analog to ADAT bridge from the channel outs of a Mackie 1604 mixer to a FOSTEX FD8 recorder. ADAT was the only way to record all 8 channels simultaneously. I then used it in reverse to dump those 8 tracks into my Beige G3 through the 324 card for processing in DP 2.71.

This was my first deal with Sweetwater. My rep was convinced that what I had in mind couldn't work but I had read the documentation and was convinced it would. He sold it to me anyway and I was very happy when it performed as I envisioned.

That sounds good! Line inputs only though, right? No mic pres?

Correct, which is all I wanted for this application anyway.

Nice! I actually have an original 2408 tucked away somewhere too.

Makes sense! It's a great way to add some more analog line inputs... especially if it was just laying around not being used!

I have a 828-3 and a 2408-2 and have used both to bring ADAT channels into the third interface. I generally works well, but I’ve noticed timing errors when there are lots of ADAT channels working. These are minor and easily fixed, a few samples missing every few minutes on one channel, easily fixed with a sample editor pencil tool. You might not get this, but I suggest you record some test signals for a few minutes and see if you get a glitch you miss later.

Is this something that can be alleviated by having a master clock and slaving the various interfaces via Word Clock? Not even sure if all the interfaces you mentioned have WC in. I have a Lucid GENx192 that I pulled out of my rack and don't really need right now, but I'm keeping it in mothballs just in case I bump up against a sync issue someday.

It happened with various clocking options. It might have been a problem specific to one of my units. It was always one specific channel.

Hello. I'm having an issue getting my 2408 mk3 analog outputs to work.

I use the 2408 connected to a MOTU 8Pre USB and a MacBook Pro M2 running Sonoma. The 2408 is connected via ADAT in/out to Bank A on the 8Pre. All the inputs work as expected on both devices, but I'm having trouble getting the 2408 outputs to function at all. I'm using the 8Pre as the master out of necessity.

Should this setup work as expected? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do but, in stand-alone mode, Bank A is your format converter from ADAT or TASCSM to Analog or vise versa, IIRC — maximum number of tracks is 8 @ 44.1/48kHz or 4 @ 88.2/96kHz. The other two banks can only convert ADAT to/from TASCAM. There is no mixer without the PCI-424 card being involved.

It's been over 25 years since I did this. Here's the manual.
