No Firefox Audio on 828x after Sonoma update RESOLVED

Post by cuttime »

Title says it. Mac internal audio is fine. All other browsers work fine, so there is a workaround, however I prefer Firefox for some extensions which I have come to rely on.

Have you updated to the latest Firefox?

There's a setting that might be involved:

Firefox > Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Autoplay Settings > Default for all websites.

Just a guess.

Thanks for the reply! Yes to all the above - if there was only a way to select the audio device.

Have you tried playing with the configure speakers settings in Audio MIDI setup. Maybe Firefox is sending system audio to the wrong output. (I don't even know if tat's possible. I'm just thinking out loud here).

Hope you find a solution.

Well I just fixed it, but I'm not sure why. I set MOTU Audio Setup Main Out Assign to Main Out 1-2. It has been on Analog 1-2 for years and never been a problem, and all other browsers have respected this except Firefox, and only after the Sonoma update. I guess if this is the worst that happens I'm lucky.

P.S. No sound in my other browsers when set to Main Out 1-2. :smash:

Glad you found a work-around, but it sounds like a PIA. So you have to switch it if you switch browsers?

AAAND...with the latest FF update (128.0) this issue has gone away and FF once again acknowledges Analog 1-2 (the defaults). No where in the release notes do I see anything about audio outputs. I do wish browsers gave you more options for audio devices.

I was on one of the juries in the Mozilla vs AT&T suit over Firefox a few years ago. Hearing all of the technical reasons why AT&T dumped FF in favor of Chrome was quite educational—not unlike watching a Max Sennet Keystone Cops comedy on TCM.

Large corp. lawsuits often have multiple trials where the verdicts are advisory only. The object is for both parties to get an idea of which way the wind is blowing on their way to a settlement. My first was in 1996 on the Intel vs AMD suit over unpaid royalties over “microcode”.

I had a similar problem; a firefox update broke the ability for me to switch from main to headphones; in the MOTU audio setup; it would always go through main. The workaround I found is to install firefox ESR and use it instead of the regular firefox until it's fixed (which it might be?). I also filed a bug report at the time so maybe they did something about it.
