Delayed MIDI notes - RESOLVED

Post by midilance »

Sometimes there is a slight delay when playing notes on my keyboard. This does not happen all the time. It doesn't happen on every project. There has to be something I have done in a project that causes this. Any suggestions?

What I've found affects it for me, is if there are plugins on the Master Fader track that have a lot of latency. If you have Ozone or some sort of limiter that does heavy processing, it will add a lot of latency to the main stereo buss and you will feel a delay when playing VIs... regardless of your buffer settings.

Because you said it's project specific, I'm thinking that might be what is going on. Look what plugins you have on your Master Fader in the projects where you're experiencing the latency. One way around this is to save the chain as an effects insert preset and then remove the plugins. Another method is you can have TWO Master Fader tracks assigned to the same output in the Mixing Board and the left most one will be active, the one to the right is ignored. So make a second Master Fader track and move it to the left of the one with the plugins and perhaps add a Trim plugin to it to compensate for any loss of volume... and record MIDI that way. When you don't need to record MIDI swap positions of the Master Fader with the one with all the plugins on it to the left of the other.

Ha! I'm on a roll!

Not to go too far afield, but even though they aren't fully burned it, I made a Sonarworks profile of my room and uploaded it into the ADAMs. Immediately I noticed much less low end. Obviously I have some room treatment I need to do. Probably some real bass trapping.

Nonetheless, Sonarworks may be a bandaid... but it's a good bandaid. I made adjustments with the Sonarworks profile uploaded into the ADAM A77H and my next mix sounded MUCH better! Check the mix on the computer speakers in my office, and was actually pretty happy with it. A friend I sent a mix too of the same piece last night said this one sounded really professional after the room correction was applied.

But yeah... on my list of things to do is some better acoustical treatment so the room correction isn't working so hard.

I'm going to move this topic to "Troubleshooting" since that seems to be more appropriate for it.

No problem. Trust me... I bumped up against this issue hard. I only noticed it when I started adding plugs like Ozone etc to my Master Fader before projects were mostly complete.
