Can I divert Mac keyboard app to an iPad temporarily?

Post by James Steele »

Wondering if anything like this is possible. I keep an iPad to the right of me while working in the studio. The QWERTY keyboard is directly in front of me. I'm using a wired keyboard with my Mac. I'm wondering if there's any sort of utility out there that would let me divert the output of my Mac keyboard temporarily to my iPad (via Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.). The ability to occasionally switch over while I'm working and type something quickly into the iPad rather than use the cumbersome on screen keyboard would be awesome.

One possibility I suppose is perhaps a bluetooth keyboard that has the ability to switch from one device to the other. Pretty sure they are out there.

Mmmm... that looks good. of course, nothing is perfect right. I have an Arogsy desk and my S3 is in front of me and my Mac keyboard sits on the padded armrest just in front of the S3. The keyboard can't be more than 5" deep at most and because of the little tray on the back to hold the iPhone/iPad it's 5.7" which probably won't work. Mmmmm... the hunt continues, but this is a good start... thanks!

Found a couple of options... one MacAlly one looks good. But then you never appreciate why they don't actually list the PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS of they keyboards. I even went to MacAlly's site and nothing on the product page. Download the PDF manual. No sign of the actual dimensions of the keyboard because heck... I know it's not important to 99% of people. Sigh. Well, buy it on Amazon and return it then... shouldn't have to write to support to get basic product dimensions. yeah... i'm cranky! LOL

Went with this one:

I'm hoping judging from the pictures that it's not going to be too deep. I like the backlight (in that I sometimes have lights dim in studio) and the fact that there's a switch to turn it off. Also, just thought of this, but extra added benefit is that I can pick it up and move it around. I have a Komplete Kontrol S88 Mk2 that I think has enough room on either side of the screen that I may be able to rest it there. I can scrap the wireless numeric pad I'd been using.

It came today... I did give up a few of the function keys I had on my wired keyboard in favor of the Bluetooth selector keys, so I had to remap a few keyboard shortcuts, but all seems to be good so far. Going to remember to turn backlight off in the daytime when it's not need as that significantly cuts into battery life. Very seamless going back and forth between my Mac and my iPad though.

Amazon is funny... you read the product reviews and some are horror stories and others are great. FOR THE SAME PRODUCT. I actual tried to cancel this when I read some bad reviews, but it was too late... it was delivered. I opened it carefully in case I have issues and need the packaging, but so far now complaints. It's lightweight... same size as typical Apple keyboard and nice to just pick up and move wherever in the room with it.
