I asked because looking on Amazon, there are quite a few 5K monitors in the price range, mostly 32”, including an LG for C$1099. And, once you go to a monitor that small (27”) is there much advantage to 5K over a lower resolution?
Really the ONLY reason for a display that small at that high of a resolution is for scaling purposes with an Intel Mac heh. 2K is pretty much perfect for a 27-28" display, I would want to gouge my eyes out trying to look at 5K on that thing. Even the 27" iMac doesn't come out of the box set at 5K, it's scaled down (the OS seems to like to decide that for you when you connect your display the first time).
The way MacOS works, scaling works best when you cut your default resolution in half, for example 4k down to 1080.. If you scale a 4K display down to 2K, the Mac has to upscale your display signal to 5K first, and THEN scales it down to 2K. With my old 28" 4K Samsung (who thought that was a good idea?) my Intel Mac with the 630 GPU took a considerable CPU hit scaling to 2K. So much so I spent $500 or so on an eGPU and a new Radeon, and watched the CPU meters drop about 20-30% across my DAWs (Cubase, Live and Logic Pro).. On the M2 Pro Mini, I don't notice it thankfully (I bought a new 32" display from work and 4K is STILL too small on this size screen), but I imagine my desktop would be like liquid if my display were 5K and scaled down instead.
Those LG panels aren't very expensive on the manufacturers end (I work for ViewSonic I see these things all day), plus they aren't Apple charging you for their own corporate environment they have to maintain along with that 'lifestyle tax' you pay to be an Apple fan. It's more than likely even made in the same factory by the same people that make them for Apple heh. See it all the time with guitar pedals from Chinese manufacturers like Joyo and Mooer along with all sorts of things.. An American company comes over with some plans for an item and pays for a batch to be made. Once they're overseas, there is no stopping them putting out the same product for some local vendor with a new logo on it, which they often do. Ali Baba will have their own knock offs up shortly after it goes on sale here..
