I'm using a Yamaha DMP9-16 with a M-Audio 2496 PCI card in a Dual 2.5 G5. I'm able to route the digital output of the mixer via SPDIF into the SPDIF in on the audiophile. Mixer is outputting a 16-bit 48 KHz SPDIF signal.
I can't toggle down the 2496 SPDIF out 16 bits, it's permanently locked at 24 bits. KHz rates match. When I try to route the SPDIF output of 2496 card into the mixer - no joy... I think it's because the 2496 card is 24 bit.
Also, the DMP9-16 was a word clock. The DMP9-16 is set as the clock master and 2496 is set to external clock.
I don't think I need a word clock in this scenario, right? And I think the root cause is trying to take a 24-bit signal into a 16 bit input (didn't see anything is the M-Audio manual to suggest this). Or, is the M-Audio downbanding the signal from 24 bits to 16 bits for SPDIF out? If it is, then I'm stumped...
Can't get SPDIF Out on M-Audio 2496 to work w/ digital mixer

I've never tried the spdif routing with my 2496 pci.
Just a thought here:
have you tried running the "M-Audio Delta Control Panel" application?
Perhaps there are some settings you could adjust in that control panel.
As you no doubt are aware that application can be also opened from within Systems Preference.

Yep, use the M-Audio panel quite abit actually. I sort of got things working, but not completely. It's probably not worth it because the mixer wants to be the master clock, in turn, that hoses most of my projects because the sample rates don't agree (mixer wants to run at 48 KHz). All my masters are at 44.1 KHz... Mixer 1, me 0

I don't think this will be of any help, but I have an M-audio projectmix, and there is a bug with core audio and the spdif audio. I can't make it work, and they were able to duplicate the problem at m-audio support. Still hasn't been fixed, so, my projectmix is sitting in the corner. maybe it's a bug in their drivers? Dunno.
