To HUI or Not to HUI?

Post by pacificm »

Hello,

I just hooked up a Novation Impulse 61 MIDI keyboard to DP. Everything works fine.

However, the Novation Impulse 61 MIDI keyboard makes available a HUI functional firmware interface whereby mouse-based mixing that would otherwise be done in DP can be accomplished with sliders on the Impulse 61.

So far, I've been doing all my mixing with my mouse in DP.

Any suggestions on a preferred mixing mode - mouse-based or slider-based that you would recommend?

Please let me know your preferences and reasons why you prefer one over the other. Thanks!

Hate to make a reply that may not be that useful, but perhaps try it out and see?

I got a Native Instrument Komplete Kontrol S61 Mk2 not long ago and MOTU built in support for its built in mixer functions which are surprisingly robust. It can do plugin adjustments, etc. like my MC Control and MC Mix, but had I had this prior to purchasing the aforementioned (used) control surfaces... I might not have bought them.

Give it a shot. Hopefully maybe someone with experience your keyboard will chime in...

There are non-motorized devices like the NanoKey 2 also that will do HUI.

I have found that for me HUI is great for motorized faders, but to me the only thing I liked about HUI without mortized faders was that you could wire a punch in/out footswtich that has an LED to go red when you are recording.

Other than that, I have found mixing on-screen with a mouse is actually less confusing, but again that is just one opinion.

Good luck!
