RAM recognition

Post by andymcafee »

I recently purchased an iBook, and I added 1 GB to the internal .5 GB that was included with the iBook. After I installed the RAM I checked to make sure I showed to have 1.5 GB of RAM (in "About this Mac"). At that time, the system showed to be reading 1.5 GB of RAM. Now (a few weeks later), the system sometimes shows 1 GB, and other times it shows 1.5 GB of RAM. Any ideas why it shows different #'s at different times? I have no idea. Thanks for your knowledge.

Shut off your Mac and re-seat your RAM. It is probably loose. Be sure the clips are tight!!!

I'll try that. However, the lowest amount of RAM the computer has showed is 1GB. (The computer shipped with 512Mb, and I installed 1 Gb). That means that sometimes the computer is picking up either only the RAM I added or half of the RAM I added and what shipped with the laptop).

Or your 512 chip is loose...

Yes, try reseating the ram and see if the problem goes away (and stays away).

You might also want to try swapping the two positions. If you swap them and you have an intermittant 1gb of ram then you could have a problem with the slot....

You may also try running apple hardware test to see if one of the sticks is bad (sometimes the hardware test will pick this up).

My powerbook shipped with a bad stick of ram. Apple was good about replacing it for me though (I recieved the replacement the very next day) You definately want to get to the bottom of this while you are still under warranty.

Just a few thoughts here:

are you aware of what the Maximum RAM is for your iBook?

are you aware of which memory upgrade you require?

Download http://www.mactracker.ca/ to check the specs for your mac.

This site may be of help/interest to you regarding memory upgrade http://www.crucial.com/

Excuse me if you are well aware of those two important items in increasing RAM.

Since I have one of the newer iBooks, there is no way for me to remove the RAM that Apple installed. The maximum RAM for the iBook is 1.5 GB. I did try taking out the RAM that I installed and replacing it, but I am still having the same problem.
