plugins advice

Post by KarlSutton »

Okay, so I've been using stock DP plugs long enough, but I don't know what investment makes the most sense for me.

Here's the scoop; I have a G5 dual 1.8 so I could use UAD, but for how long? I am familiar with Waves Gold native & that seems like a decent bang for the buck and it doesn't matter what PCI G5 I have. What else should I look at for good compressors & limiters?

Thanks.

Some others to check out...

I use stuff by Wave Arts and PSP. Each have great qualities about them. I know a lot of people like the Sonalksis stuff too, so I included that too.

I like the UAD-1 stuff the best by a big margin. But, I understand your upgrade concerns. I do think UA will deal with the PCIe deal as fast as they are able.

chrispick, I really want to go with UAD to tell you the truth - the plugs look great & any stress I can take off of my computer is welcome too - what do you think they will do, offer an upgrade to a new card?

As if this hasn't been discussed to death here already... but my personal favorite is the PSP Vintage Warmer. Great value, great sound, reasonable CPU drain, not copy protected (no iLok or dongle), great customer service.

I don't know about the upgrade.

I do know this: I have a friend who works there as a UAD-1 developer, and I know he's very committed to supporting everyone as much as the company can.

IMO, the UAD-1 compressors are well worth the cost of the card. They're really great emulations of gear you've heard on countless CDs, so they have a really high "instant wow" quotient, know what I mean? And I don't say this because I know someone who works there -- I was blown away by the card before I learned my friend (whom I hadn't seen for years) worked on it.

And yeah, the burden lifted off your CPUs is great too. I often have mixes with Wave Arts TrackPlug, PSP MixCompressor and Vintage Warmer and UAD-1 1176, Fairchild and LA2A, giving me a diversity of compressor sound and effect.

I love that plug too. Goes on every mix I do. I dig it on snare drums and keyboards, especially subtractive synths.

BTW, I think Wave Arts TrackPlug can be great on kick drums. It's a great low-CPU, transparent plug (although it can be colored too, if you like).

Hi karl,

I also used stock DP plug ins for a long time and finally purchased the gold and transform bundle from waves. They are cleaner and better sounding than the DP plug ins. You can authorize them to your computer or an I-lock key. This gives you the ability to take the key with you to another studio and use the plug ins. In addition, waves gave me the latest Irl reverb,Tune (pitch correction) and one more that I just can't seem to remember at the moment. I felt like a kid at a candy store! I am very happy with this purchase and customer support is great. You might want to download the new SSL plug ins as well. They are made to resemble an SSL mixing console. I hope this helps You.

I have Waves plug-ins, and the UAD-1. G4, so I'm in a slightly different boat. But I'm not sure I understand your upgrade concerns. If you think about it, you have to upgrade software every time there is a new operating system. Waves will kick you back something until it hits a different version, like most software. Their plug-ins rule.

So far, with my UAD-1, all the software updates to go with the Mac OSX updates have been free, despite the cost of updating the Apple software itself. And the UAD plug ins are GOD.

Not sure what your scenario is. I've got a project/pro studio where I'm doing an average of 32 tracks in my full band mixes on a G4 400mhz with a 1.8ghz gigadesigns cpu upgrade (thanks for all of you that helped me with that issue). I use the 1176 on kick, snare and bass almost always, dependign on the track, and the LA2A on almost all vocals. Distorted guitars will get the LE versions, since their already compressed due to their nature. Drums get a RealVerb, maybe, and I'll still buss instruments and/or vocals to a DP reverb or two. The spatial separation of that plug in is superior to the Real or Dream verbs IMO. The early reflections of the latter two are real and accurate, but the laters get washed to basically mono. This is perhaps more realistic, reality-like, whatever. But I like being able to buss the reverb from a guitar panned to 2 o'clock and have it's reverb also fully 2 o'clock if i want it.

So the DP plug ins are, to me, still hugely useful. The eq's, the eVerb. But the compressors of the UAD-1 truly sound like the originals I've been able to work with, at least.

UAD is the ••••. And then get some waves to boot.
