How to connect 2 Computers to one MOTU M2?

Post by medcalf »

Hello everyone,

I would like to know how to connect one PC and one Mac Mini M1 to a MOTU M2.

I tried it as shown in the picture but the M2 only shows up on the Windows PC:

How can I fix this?

Thank you!

However you are managing to make the physical connections depicted, I don't think you can "fix" this.

Edit: USB C does give rise to a greater potential for unwitting improper connections. A USB hub is not designed to merge two computers' data streams. At least not to my knowledge...

Not enough information. You’ve showed us how you want to do it but left out what you’re trying to accomplish. There are two possibilities so let me guess.

If the goal is to drive both at once, you would need a device that ‘buffers’ the USB connection so that the PC cannot see the Mac and vise versa. I don’t know that such a device exists short of being another computer.

OTOH, if the goal is to do like ol’ Ron Popeil, “Set it and forget it” while you use only one at a time, you just need a switch like one of these.

Remember that USB-C is just a port, not a protocol. Since the M2 is USB-2, the least expensive USB-A to USB-C adapter cables should work.
