Control Surface Setup - DM2000 - Beyond 8 tracks

Post by RobKaplowitz »

Hi, friends.

I still run a DM2000 in my studio. I've followed the manual (pages 1015 and 1016) and can get it to show up as a HUI controller for the first 8 tracks of my DP10.13 session, but I can't seem to get it beyond those 8 tracks. When I add a 2nd and 3rd HUI using the little "+" tool and using subsequent output ports 2&3, as defined in my bundles, I get the same 8 tracks on faders 9-16 and 17-24, even though I'm using ports 2 & 3. I've tried using Mackie control and get even less traction. I also tried (just because it's there) using Output Port 1-9 for the 2nd HUI just to test - that just drops the faders out. Other troubleshooting tools: Tried making 3 devices in Bundles and dedicating each one to a subsequent port. Done restarts etc. Wondering if there's either a DP trick or maybe a DM2000 trick rattling around in the brains of one of my fellow old heads.

When I pop over to ProTools, I get all 24 tracks coming up exactly as laid out in the session, so it's not a MIDI issue, and doesn't seem to be a console issue.

Is it possible to get beyond 1-8 in DP? When searching this topic, I did find casual derisive mention of not being able to get past track 8 with some other control surface.

Thanks in advance,

-Rob

Hi Rob,

Nice to see you on this list—part of the small but vibrant Theatre designers/composers who use DP; for me it’s always been about having all my cues in one file (chunks and VRacks), but I digress.

The short answer to your question is no, you can’t control more than 8 tracks at once on a DM1000 or DM2000 using HUI or Mackie Control on DP. This has been a problem since the introduction of these Yamaha consoles back around 2004. I remember Yamaha’s promise to provide compatibility, my eager anticipation of such an awesome controller when we bought them (2 DM2000’s and 3 DM1000’s in all), and the many hours of discussion with both MOTU and Yamaha in which each suggested the problem lay with the other manufacturer, and my same frustration as you (Reading the … manual, trying every possible configuration etc.,). Eventually I just gave up hope. Now Yamaha isn’t even supporting servicing these old consoles, so I’m accepting the inevitable need to move on when mine gives out.

Sorry and wish I had a better answer for you, but that at least has been my experience.

Hey, Rick!

Thanks so much for this answer (even though it's not the answer I wanted...)

Yeah - for me, it's about building a whole show in a single session. But because I use it so much, I'm so much faster in DP than in ProTools...

Ok - I won't waste any more time on trying to make this work! Current project needs to either be 8 tracks, or mixed in ProTools.

Thank you,

Hey Rob,

Are you using DP 11?

In DP 11, MOTU revamped and vastly improved MCU functionality. They made it work fully with my console's MCU for the first time since I've had it, about 9 years. If you're not on DP 11, you might want to download the demo and see if it's any better.. awesome you still have a working DM, those were cool!

Yeah I have a similar issue with my 15 year old Yamaha O1V96... I can only get faders 9-16 working. I was hoping DP11's enhanced controller support would finally mean 16 fader capability, but alas, no dice... Too bad, cause I've always liked this console and its potential!

I'm still on 10.13 - sounds like Terra303's experience is not promising with 11. I'm sure I'll go up to 11 soon, but I'm in production right now, and I try never shifting anything major mid-project....

I'll report back if 11 makes a difference w/ the DM2k.

(If it works, I have a spare I could sell someone...)

I thought of this thread when I was looking over an Pro Tools setup document for my console. It may be nothing, but worth a try.

In DP control surface setup, set the input of the first HUI to channel 1. Set the output to channel 2. On the first expansion HUI, set the input to channel 3, then set its output to channel 4.

That's all I saw in my setup doc, but I would assume you would follow the same pattern with channels 5 and 6 in the third HUI.
