Help Understanding Soundbite Tempo

Post by sockmonkey »

Hi, riddle me this:

1. open a fresh copy of Tutorial 3 (https://cdn-data.motu.com/downloads/dp/ ... 0Files.zip), make sure you're at 44.1 kHz (just so your setup matches mine -- the same thing happens at 48kHz, but the values provided below will be slightly different)
2. import the Guitar Loop file from the Loops folder using File > Import Audio
3. drag the soundbite from the Soundbites Window to the Sequence Editor, creating a new audio track for the soundbite. The soundbite will occupy 4|037 beats at the default tempo of q=80
4. Select the Soundbite and choose Audio > Soundbite Tempo > Set Soundbite Tempo... and note the weird values (end time is given as 2|2|096, when it is in fact 1|4|037; length is given as 5|096 when it is in fact 4|037). The tempo is given as q=104 -- which is in fact correct for the file, but it's not what I'd expect to see at this point. If one were to attempt to modify the length of the file to, say 4|000, it will set the tempo to q=80(!).
5. Cancel and try again, not the same weird values, choose OK this time, confirming those values.
6. (Select the Soundbite and) choose Audio > Soundbite Tempo > Set Soundbite Tempo... and everything is now displaying as expected, and it's possible to modify the tempo based on the desired clip length.

So is this a bug? Or is DP trying to tell me something that I'm just not understanding? Note that this is all with Stretch=off, but the same thing happens with stretch enabled.

I came across this trying to follow the tutorials, and it's not a showstopper per se (at least I know how to work around it), but it's unintuitive and also contradicts what I'd expect based on the tutorial text. I've filed a report with MOTU, but haven't received a response, so I thought I'd try here, as well.

I'd love to describe this with a screenshot, but looks like embedded image files are disabled on this forum. Thank you!

Which version of DP? I’m pretty sure there was a bug with that feature in DP 10 that didn’t get fixed…although I haven’t checked it in DP11.
Mac 2.8 8-core, 20 GB RAM, Mac 10.9, DP 8, EWQLSO Platinum Play, Mach V II, Kontakt 5, Superior Drummer, AIR, Absynth 5, Plectrum, CronoX, Albino3, RMV, cup of tea.
