Inserting Sawtooth Volume Curves

Post by lampfilmusic »

Using DP9, triangle, sine and square etc. wave shapes for volume automation can be drawn over soundbites, but I do not see sawtooth listed. :-? Does anyone know a way to draw this shape without having to click the shape apexes, copy and paste manually etc.?

The Reshape tool doesn't have sawtooth, but you could try to draw them manually with the tool in free mode.
Have you checked the Insert Continuous Data command? Maybe you can do them there.

I wonder how other DAWs handle this particular shape.

In synth terms, a triangle is not a sawtooth.

Sure, but once you have the triangle, you can drag select the top or bottom points and drag them to get whatever slopes you want. Adjust the frequency with the shift key, and so on. Shooshie's MIDI edit tips is a good place for a downtime browse,

Absolutely, Bayswater. People should read the Tips Sheet more often (including me).

Clever!
If you were really impressed, you'd have spelled it "Klever." :sorry:

But Bay's suggestion clearly is, regardless of spelling!

Shooshie's the klever one. (I have no idea what klever is. The spell checker doesn't like it.)

Yes, but there's more.
The triangle shape is modifiable to a sawtooth. Check out the modifier keys (page 405 of dp 10 user guide). For sawtooth, use the control key and drag to the right. To change the direction of the skew drag to the left. Release the modifier key once you get the desired shape and/or frequency and continue dragging. You can switch modifier keys on the fly.

If you have multiple areas to draw with the same shape, hold the esc key while dragging and it will draw the shape from your previous drag.

I can't remember, however, if these features were all available in dp9. :?

Thanks all. Thanks Philip for the useful key commands.

In the end I did it by drawing my own sawtooth freehand and copying and pasting.
