My forced upgrade to Big Sur

Post by funkyfreddy »

I was forced to upgrade to Big Sur because my iMac that I've used as a stable music computer bit the dust last week. I'm now using my MacBook Pro which already had Big Sur on it.

I haven't had any issues so far but it's been less than a week and I haven't tackled any large projects yet. My system is running an Apollo UAD Quad with a handful of Waves plugins, UAD, a bunch of Arturia stuff, Soundtoys, etc.

What aggravates me the most is that I can't run some of the older stuff like Ethno 2 and MOTU wasn't helpful at all when I asked them to give me a couple more iLok authorizations to try and get their MOTU instruments and Ethno running again. Dealing with iLok's BS is one of the worst things about having to upgrade. There's always a catch with iLok.... and it always happens when you under a ton of stress. It often seems as if they want to punish you for paying for software..... seriously.... There has to be a better way!

One nice thing was Soundtoys. Their customer service was excellent!!! I contacted them with my iLOK issues and they immediately fixed my authorizations, unlike MOTU who passed the buck back to iLok. 🙁

it took me days to download the software and make it play nice again, partly because my Wi Fi decided to act up after my iMac died. I spent a lot of $$ on adapters alone just to get my ethernet and thunderbolt stuff going again..... Oy Vey....

I don't know about Apple anymore.... Their products do not seem like they are built to last in my humble experience. I say this reluctantly as I have been using Mac's since 1985. I started on a Mac + using Opcode's Vision....

What a long strange trip it's been.....

Yowch! Glad you're on the other side of that. After an attempted foray into windows and my heels now solidly dug into a screaming mojaved hackintosh, I feel your pain and you've inspired me to clone my boot drive once again. Curious what was the main issue with iLok, did you loose the authorizations on a dead drive? Hope you're well - Bradford (Reed)

HI Bradford, How are you? Been a long time! I hope you are doing well!

MY iLok is all messed because I lost another computer a while ago (seems to happen every 3 years or so with Macs) and was locked out of my account, then accidentally created another account on the iLok. Now iLok wants to charge me at least $50 to put it right. All of my apps were working great on the iMac but now I need more authorizations to activate them on the MacBook Pro. As I said, they punish you for paying for your software.

MOTU could authorize me again but I guess it's too much to ask them to send iLok an e-mail even though I have been a paid MOTU customer since the '90's. Meanwhile Soundtoys jumped right on it..... they did it the same day I contacted them.

I'm going to start hassling MOTU again to do so.... It's just I've been through so much BS this past week just to get up and running again that I needed to get some work done before spending more hours in upgrade hell. I'm just glad at this point to be able to record again!
