upgrading dp3 to dp4.5 will my g4 mono 466 cope ?

Post by bluesdudeo »

Hi there,
as the subject suggests ... I'm about to take the plunge and upgrade. I need to know if my old g4 mono 466 will cope . I wont be using it with any added plug ins or softsynths ... just sort of hoping I can get another 6 months out my mac g4 before taking the plunge and going G5 ... WHICH i'M ALSO VERY CONFUSED ABOUT as in pci compatability .

Thanks for your patience dudes. OLd timer trying to let go of the old times.
yours David Ian Vaughan.

ps: If I just upgrade the g4 to OSX .. WILL DP3 STILL WORK ?

You won't be happy. 4.5 and OSX take alot more horsepower. Wait till you can afford a G5 or even the iMac Intel when DP releases their universal binary in the second quarter.

Doubtful. OSX has an OS9 Classic mode that starts up when a Classic app is launched (but OS9 needs to be installed), which will entail a speed penalty. And, I'm not sure how Classic mode works with existing audio drivers. My gut says "don't go there." That said, you could try installing OSX on a separate drive. But, the latest G5s don't even run OS9, so you'd need an earlier model G5. I wouldn't limit yourself in this way just to run DP3. Better to keep the old mac for DP3, and invest in a later model refurbished G5 from the Apple store that has PCI-X slots, if you need these slots.

Ditto - OSX requires DP4, and when I tried to run it on a 400Mhz G4
it was a sad experience.

I just got a G5 DP2.3Ghz, and I won't be looking back.
