Memory Cycle plus Overdub is NOT creating new takes

I found an unanswered post with this same issue from a few years back:

Basically, ONE project has stopped working correctly. A recording pass using memory cycle and overdub does NOT create a new take, the record button in the transport goes from red to dark and DP appears to just be playing, not recording. (But in fact it is still recording, which you can see if stop the transport and then edge edit the new soundbite.)

Out of the corner of my eye, earlier today, I THOUGHT I may have seen the memory cycle strip appear with a SQUARE at its end time (like the auto record strip)... but I could easily be wrong on that.

Any thoughts?
