Doubling of sound when comping

Post by rmosci »

Hi. I wondered whether anyone has run across this, which has happened intermittently in my setup. When using the comp tool, the sound of the audio tracks seems to be doubled, almost like a flange sound. Once I’ve completed the comping, the sound is normal. Just a strange aberration, perhaps a restart might have fixed it immediately. Thanks.

Sounds like you’ve got a feedback loop. Perhaps the output of the recording track is being fed again into the track via mixer-to-I/O? This happens to me as well, sometimes.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your feedback (excuse the pun). I don’t think that was happening because after I finished comping the doubling was gone, with no changes to my monitoring setup. I believe that it may be a glitch in DP. I was soloing the comp tracks (I had 2 tracks that I was comping simultaneously). I think the solo setting had something to do with it. I tried to recreate it this afternoon, but it didn’t happen. I’ll be doing more of this, and will update the post if it happens again, and try to examine what may be causing this (it’s happened on 2 different sessions). Cheers.

No, that's exactly what's happening. You're hearing the track's playback as you're recording along with the live signal — and will if you don't disable that track's playback when comping.

Those of us with interfaces that have I/O Mix/Blend control (such as the M4's Input/Playback knob) have to make the decision to deal with it or ignore and live with this. I'm in the camp that ignores this. It's worst in the 50/50 position so I never have my control there.

Exactly- of course when you’re done recording the doubling goes away— no feedback on playback—.

Hi guys,

I wasn’t recording. I was using DP10’s comp tool to select the best takes on previously recorded tracks. Eg: I had 6 takes of a vocal part already recorded, and was used the “show takes” command, and then used the comp tool to slice and dice the best parts of all the takes.

So unless I’m misunderstanding the way you’re using the term “recording”, I don’t think that applies. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Thanks!

As an addendum to my last post: I comped using the command “show takes”, at which time I heard the doubling. As soon as I finished the comping by using the command “hide takes” the doubling disappeared.I’m not sure if you are both familiar with the comp tool, but only one take plays at a time. I do think that this had to do with soloing somehow, and that a glitch was involved.

For anyone interested, I’ve recreated this “doubling” of the audio when using the comp tool. It only happens when I’m using the solo function as I comp. For example: I’m comping a vocal part, and I just want to hear the vocal and say piano and bass rather than a fuller rhythm section. With solo enabled, the vocal comp track is doubled (it’s played back with a slight delay on the doubled part, which makes it audible). If I take the solo function off, and comp the vocal part, it sounds normal. I can workaround by just muting the tracks I don’t want to hear. It seems to be a bug, nothing terrible, but there it is.

I can reproduce this, but only if I solo both the comp and one of the takes that makes up the comp when they appear in the mixer. Then both play, effectively doubling what was recorded in the take. I'm not sure this is a bug, but it is perhaps an unintended consequence of having the ability to comp tracks and solo them, and solo the takes as well.

I don't know what the alternative would be. If I solo a comp and a take at the same time, I'd want to hear both, although I don't know why I'd do that.

When it’s happened for me, it’s only the track itself (meaning whatever is currently selected for comping) (generally called comp1). But somehow there is a feedback loop via solo that’s in effect doubling the sound.

If you have a sample project that can reproduce this, it would help to file it with a MOTU tech link.
