M4 disappears after wake-up

Post by Chrisk-K »

My M1 Mac Mini running the latest Big Sur doesn't recognize my M4 after wake-up. This is odd because the M4 stays on even after my Mac goes into sleep. The only way to get the M4 reappear as a sound device is unplug and replug it (powering it off and on again doesn't work). I'm not sure if this happened when I first got my M4 a couple weeks ago. Your comments will be welcome!

Yup. I had a similar issue with my 2012 MBP (I don't remember which Mac OS version), but for me powering off and back on again via the power switch worked to re-establish the M4 as a default device.

I got the M4 when my RME audio interface broke. But I got the RME working again, and my M4 is relegated mobile duties-- which are few and far between.

I have just got my M1 mac mini (big sur) and having the exact same issue, but only sometimes. When it sleeps overnight it can see the m4 on waking. But if I leave my computer for an hour or two during the day this is when it doesn't seem to recognise it. It also happened on my old intel MBP (catalina) but using only the switch worked for me then. Now simply switching on and off does not work, got to unplug and then replug. Anyone know if this is a mac os issue or a motu issue? Hopefully an M1 specific driver from motu will be coming soon! I see they've got a big sur one but only for intel mac.

EDIT: I've noticed that this only happens when it sleep automatically, not when I put the M1 to sleep manually. So my workaround is that I have it set to never sleep automatically and instead go to screensaver. Then I put it to sleep manually when I know I'll be away from it for a while. Doing this, the M1 can see my M4 all the time, no matter when/if I turn off/on the M4. Hope that helps.

I have the same problem with my new Mac Mini (M1) and my M2 interface.
After computer comes back from sleep mode, the audio interface is not connected (physically it's powered on) to the computer.

Turning it off and on again doesn't work, I have to unplug the USB and plug it back for it to reappear.

Edit (fix?):

I had to disabled the "Put computer to sleep..." and "Put hard disks to sleep when possible", and also installed the optional M2/M4 driver, and this seems to have fixed the problem, with the caveat of computer staying awake... Although with the Mac Mini M1, when monitors are off, the energy usage is quite minimal.

I have the exact same problems on a 2020 MBP 13" (Intel) with Big Sur. It's deeply frustrating. Adding to this the audio sometimes is noisy (audible artifacts) when the interface is powered down/up using the power button. I must say I'm pretty close to just giving up on the M4 and going back to RME.

I WOULD suggest that you do a "tour" with MOTU support, because making them aware of this and troubleshooting this is the best way of getting it addressed in a firmware/driver update. However, because DP11 just dropped, I'm not sure how that will affect their support availability. If they have dedicated DP people and dedicated hardware people, then it might not matter. Wouldn't hurt to start a support ticket, even if you have to wait a bit. I know it is time consuming and not how any of us would want to spend time, but you would be helping others through your efforts.
